Octy 1.8t mk1 em light

Featured Replies

Hi good people of brisk, been a while :)

I hate to come back and ask for help straight away but my mums mk1 octy 1.8t 4x4 threw a engine light up and started idling badly. I could smell unburnt fuel so bought another coil pack and tried it in cylinder one and nothing changed. Put it into number two and the idle was smooth again :)

But the em light is still on! Do these need to be reset as I've seen some people have just replaced the duff coil pack and the light went out and some that need reseting.

I've not got vagcom so I'm thinking the main dealer will still be getting some of my hard earned to reset the light?

Thanks

Dean

Anyone?

I think they do need resetting, you can buy a cheap code reader/re-setter off of ebay for about £20.

Thanks for that, I've bit the bullet and bought one. I'll test it out and report back :)

I've used them to reset codes before. Good luck.

Some codes will allow the light to go out after a certain period of problem-free motoring (I think it's of the order of tens-of-miles or tens-of-hours) but I think others hold the light on until it's cleared. Either way, the fault code will remain in memory (even if the light's off) until it's cleared.

From what you've described, you've probably got a misfire fault code, which should allow the light to out all by itself.

I seem to recall you being in Maidstone, aren't you? I'm just Maidstone-side of Tonbridge and have VAG-COM if you'd like me to scan and reset. The only thing is, I don't have a laptop with a battery that lasts more than about 30 seconds, but if you have one on which you could install VCDS, I have the magic cable (and it's a genuine one so won't complain about licences).
