Charcoal Canister

Featured Replies

Hi,

I want to change my Charcoal Cansister on my 2.0 TFSI VRS.

Last week the exhaust warning light came on. Today I took the car in to my Skoda dealer for them to tell me that the charcoal canister was needing changed and the EML light was displayed. The cost of the inspection was £43.18! and the replacement cost is £200.

I would like to carry out this work myself if possible, are there any know causes for this fault? Can I remove and clean the charcoal canister to resolve or does it need replaced. Is this available as a pattern part or not?

Regards,

Ewan

that sounds fishy to me.. all it does is temporarily store vapour from the fuel tank until it is purged into the intake during normal running.. the charcoal canister doesn't normally get 'consumed' in normal use.

what were the specific fault codes you were getting?

If it is the canister causing the problem and it is not leaking, then all it probably needs is a new purge valve. These are not exactly cheap (£50ish), but can be replaced in less than a minute.

I have no idea what the fault code was as they did not give me them when I picked the car up.

On the recipt it says :

"Work Requested: CARRY OUT VISUAL HEALTH CHECK

EML WARNING LIGHT ON DASH AND CAR RUNNING FINE

Work Completed: CARRIED OUT VISUAL HEALTH CHECK

EML WARNING LIGHT ON DASH AND CAR RUNNING FINE

CARRIED OUT GFF TRACED TO CHARCOAL CANISTER."

On the visual health check form it says Purge / charcoal canister faulty and my tyre tread depths....

Can you recommend a fault code reader, that can be used to reset the engine management lights? I fancy doing an oil change sometime also...

Cheers,

Ewan

You need to get the car scanned to find the source of your problem. It maybe nothing to do with the charcoal canister.

I had the evap fault on mine, I replaced the purge valve but code still came back, new charcoal canister fixed it.

My new-to-me Fabia has just had work done involving the evap canister. Apparently, under normal use, it should last the life of the vehicle.

If the owner is in the habit of overfilling the tank, instead of petrol fumes, the charcoal becomes soaked in liquid petrol which is difficult to purge. The trick is to avoid overfilling ie trying to get more in beyond the first click.

The check engine light came on during my test ride! Yet I still bought it!

you are right to question my sanity.

Some owners are obsessed with getting as many miles/km per tank of fuel and do such things, others want a round amount of fuel or payment so keep clicking, you know why these are not such good ideas.
