Service and Re-mapping Advise

Featured Replies

Looking for a bit of advise and recommendations for where to take my recently acquired vRS.

It is four years old but only just covered 30k miles - should I get the cambelt and water pump changed based on age or mileage? All views welcome.

Also want to get it re-mapped at the same time if money allows. Live just outside Banbury in Oxfordshire, but work in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. Anyone got any recommendations as to who to take it too based on those locations? One final question, if you've re-mapped, who has notified their insurance company, and how much difference did it make to the cost of your insurance policy? So that'll be two questions then... :giggle:

Thanks everyone.

from memory i think the cambelt should be changed at 5 years or 70k whichever accurs first , someone will correct me if im wrong ,cant help on any local to yourself but can recommend shark performance as im sure will a few others on here emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Thanks MarkMac. I'll bar Shark Performance in mind if I can't find anyone closer.

Thanks Dark_Hero.

Cambelt is 4 years or 60,000 miles so it needs doing now. And if you are planning a re-map you need to declare it to your insurance.

Doh! Thought that might be the case, but was living in (false) hope! It's going to be an expensive service then... :(

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Unit 18 is near MK, not heard one single bad thing, they know their stuff too! We`ll worth a trip IMO

I took a trip there early in the afternoon, Friday before last... it was closed. Rang and left a message on their voicemail... haven't heard anything back from them in just shy of two weeks. Guess my money just isn't good enough!!! Thanks for the suggestion though - haven't ruled them out, but not exactly a confidence inspiring start.

Hi there, i m very dissapointed you feel that way, i dont remember being closed friday to be honest did you try the door on the side of the roller shutter? its been very cold so we have the shutter down during the day at the moment, on the voicemail front we had a series of powercuts as eon apparently drilled through the mains supply to bozeat which meant my answerphone was wiped, feel free to drop me an email if you like? or call tomorrow and we ll do our best to re assure you

yeah cambelts need changing after either 60k or 4 years. change due to wear & tear after 60k or because of material degridation after 4 years

Don't discount Unit 18 on them being closed

Ali is a top bloke and his work is top notch (he's also normally dirt cheap! :))

I would give him a bell again.

The results and normally pricing are on the mark if you get hold of him

He also does a good line in cheap reputable MoTech remaps - they were £200 ish quid last time i checked against most other competitors who were £100 more expensive.

But yes tell your insurance company otherwise if you do come foul of a hedge they'll have exactly the wiggle room then need to reject your claim

Remap on mine to ~170bhp added about 10% to the insurance - but it does limit the number of companies that will insure you.

Do declare it as the insurance company may well check it if you are involved in an accident.

Thanks for the explanations. I'm more than happy to give you a call tomorrow and get an idea for costings and timings. Many, many thanks.

Well that's all sorted - after speaking to Allytech it's booked into Unit 18 next Thursday. Think it's time to empty the piggy-bank! ;)

Ally, forgot to ask on the phone, but if I'm going to have the re-map, would it also be advisable to have the PD160 intake done as well?

the pd160 intake doesnt make much of a noticeable difference really, except for letting a little extra air into the mix and therefore resulting in less of the black stuff from the back!

Yeah its not a massive "must have". And tbh, if you map it now, and get the intake later, it`ll adjust itself for little bits like that, as said, just reducing smoke a little. Glad you spoke to Ali, i`v not taken my car anywhere else since my first trip there 18 months ago, speaks for itself i think!

Matt

/\ as above really, on more aggresively mapped cars - hybrids with fmic etc the pd160 is actually worth around 10hp on the rollers we've noticed

; )
