Glow plug removal/refitting advice

Featured Replies

I need to get the glow plugs replaced after them being an ornament the last few weeks and with it being so cold now.

I'm just after some advice as I don't want them snapping in the head :o

Would it be best to take them out after a run so the engines warm or when it's cold and soak them in wd40 for a while ?

Thanks

Changed my glow plugs a couple of weeks ago, the day before I sprayed them with WD40 (a good soaking)

Then when it came to removing the cable that attaches to the glow plug is similar to the spark plug lead on petrol engine cars, a sharp tug and it then comes off.

I found a deep 10mm 1/4" drive socket was the best way to remove them, I also used a wobble extension ( I suppose a universal joint would do the same job)

When I fitted the new ones I put a little copper grease on the threads just to help get them started on the threads.

My engine was cold when I done this, once fitted I was amazed how much easier the engine was to start.

I got mine from ebay - seller auto-parts-direct £19.79 delivered even if I need to replace every couple of years I still think they are a bit of a bargain.

Hope this helps?

Thanks for that Davie I'll give them a good spray with WD40 overnight and hopefully they will come out fine :)

No problem - hope it all goes to plan for you

Fitted them today and they all came out no probs and new ones back in no probs, gave the threads on new ones a light coat of copper grease so they should come out easy enough if/when they need to be changed in the future.

Just need the fault clearing so the EML goes off now :)

Thanks again
