how much are 15" steel rims ?

Depends if your buying brand new mate, I'm looking at spending £60 at my scrappies for 15 inch wheels for four.

Hi,

recently enquired myself from a local dealer, quoted £200 with Skoda 15" wheel trims to go with. Problem is finding winter tyres as there's non locally and mytyres currently are pricing theirs in some cases with a 50% mark up due to a shortage of supply. Did a quick price up and opting for a mid range Semperit 195/55 winter tyre, would with fitting cost over £650 :o

Could get steels with tyres fitted from mytyres again expensive but cheaper than the above; £440 delivered for budget Matadors or £560 for Bridgestone Blizzak.

The cost of Golf Mk4 15" steel wheels at a breakers has increased significantly over the last couple of weeks. I was quoted £20 for one, but managed to get two for £30. In contrast my son bought four alloy wheels complete with reasonable (summer) tyres for his BMW for £36 on Ebay!!!!!!!!!

I'd like to know this too as a forum member has asked me how much for my set of four original steel wheels but I have no idea how much o sell them for.

for those of you who have existing alloys, you need to be aware that you need the correct steel bolts and not alloy bolts if using steel wheels.

Steel wheels require radius seat bolts as do standard Skoda alloys. Aftermarket alloys tend to use 60 degree tapered seats so to swap to skoda steelies from non-standard alloys you will need to change your bolts but not if you run manufacturers alloys

i called my dealer yesterday and they said steel wheels would cost £42 each.

u might as well pick up some alloys. if u already have alloys u can use the existing alloy bolts.

That wasn't the case for our Mk Octavia ... the dealer spent quite some time checking and found the same wheel bolts should be used.

This makes sense if you are using oem wheels as sometimes the cars are supplied with 4 alloys and a steel spare.

Wheels for other manufacturers may be different, (it certainly was the case for rwd Alfas).

The dealer said that there is only one type of wheel bolt available for our Mk1 Octavia, to be used with the oem original fitted alloy wheels as well as the oem dealer supplied steel wheels.

One point to remember is that the VAG oem wheels are located on the hub by the hole in the middle, and the wheel bolts are used to hold the wheel against the hub. The different types of wheel bolt relate to the shape of the mating surfaces between the bolt and the wheel. These are shaped the same for VAG supplied wheels, whether alloy or steel.

For some cars / wheels, the wheel bolts / nuts are used to locate the wheel on the hub, and sometimes these are differently shaped, hence the need for different bolts / nuts.

It's also possible that after-market wheels, whether alloy or steel, may require different bolts / nuts.

i'm not talking about the type of bolt but the material. it's better to use alloy bolts with alloy wheels otherwise the steel bolts are too hard and may damage the alloy. on the other hand alloy is softer than steel so it may be best to use steel bolts with steel wheels.

Why don't you take a magnet and do some investigating ...?

I did. A torch helped. The wheel bolts that Skoda supplied with our Mk1 Octavia are iron or steel, even tho' the wheel is alloy. I checked an Alfa as well. Both the studs and the nuts are steel or iron but the wheel was not. I'll lay odds that nearly all car wheel bolts and nuts are steel, whatever material is used for the wheels.

i'll do that. i used alloy/aluminium bolts for the safe side, if there's no benefit then they do look nicer

perhaps my bolts are steel bolts with an alloy/aluminium coating! they are shiny.
