CLICKING SOUND ON FULL LOCK

Featured Replies

Please can anyone offer a possible explanation for this effect. I live up a steep track with a RH hairpin bend half way up. When I am going around the hairpin, not quite on full lock, I can hear a loud clicking sound. I have only ever noticed this during this manouvre and never at any other point on full lock. in either direction. There are no ESP warning lights on etc. and it has occurred with both the std tyres and my winter steelies/tyres. I know any problem will be covered by warranty etc. but if I have some idea of what this might be, if anything not normal, before I take it in, as it will be very difficult to replicate.

Cheers.

Clicking noises when on full lock are normally down to a worn CV joint

But this is a brand new car.

Can you be more specific to the source of the noise? Is it coming from the steering mechanics or inside? Stick your head out the window & have a listen.

If it is a regular clicking noise which is road-speed related then it is likely to be trouble with a CV joint - usually the outer.

Try doing some full lock turns in a car-park to localise it.

It seems to come from the passenger side. So this is on the outside of the RH turn on a steep bend. As I said, so far I have not been able to reproduce this under any other conditions. My initial thoughts were something to do with the power steering. I repeat, the car has done only 1300 miles so if it were a CV joint it would have to have been faulty from manufacture.

There was a steering-rack recall which effected earlier Scouts (in fact this recall affected a shed load of cars across the MkV Golf Platform) - mine was one of them, the fault was very similar to this, in that during steering toward full lock you would hear a clicking sound which sounded like a mechanical grinding also from the passenger side (hence my previous question).

But as I say, this was on a batch of dodgy steering racks which was back in 2007 & very much doubt the same applies on new models.

There is some posts relating to this, which also described a way of checking part numbers etc... Worth a look.

Have you checked underneath and is the CV boot still on OK?

I have seen a new car with the CV boot having popped off after a few hundred miles. Driving round like this will throw all the grease out and collect dirt, salt etc in its place.

Hello Thorfinn,

Take it back to the dealer and complain, at least there will be a recording of this fault

if problem becomes a break-down sometime later.

Coincidentally I noticed mine doing this today - not a very loud click, but noticeable and only on full lock. The car's only a year old so it won't be wear. Most cars make some sort of noise on full lock so I'm not worrying about it. Might mention it at next service.
