Common MOT Failures

Featured Replies

My MOT is due this month, are there any common failures for the vRS? Simple things that I can check over myself?

Lights, tyres. In 3 years of MOT`s they have been my only "advisories" If you keep on top of things, should sail thru tbh

I've had an advisory on the rear brakes owing to the fact the pads don't sweep to the outer edges of the discs which then rust up.

Console bushes seem to pop up quite often, if they fail make sure to have them replaced with the better parts so they don't fail again.

tie rod ends on the front can go

Nothing really other than lights which is just stupidity, check all lamps are working as they should, failing an MOT because a brake light is out is stupidity

TYRES No way round it, My last got an advisory as only 6mm Hells bells they are only 8mm new and 1.6 as illegal Why they put this down I do not know

IMHO they have to find something to show they have checked the car

Oh sorry my last was advisory bonnet catch too tight! WTF, It opens just have to give a good tug, where is that on the MOT?

If it was bonnet latch too slack and could blow open whilst driving then that would be acceptable to me

Windscreen washers are prone to not working at this time of year, check your tyre fitment, directional and asymmetric tyres should be fiited a certain way, the sidewall will be marked outside on asymmetric and rotation with a direction arrow on directional tyres.

Tread depth isn't the only consideration, damage to the tread, both sidewalls and valve condition is also checked for.

Presenting an uncluttered car preferably with a boot not full of stuff helps the tester.

Don't present it with air freshners hanging off the mirror and sat nav brackets stuck to the windscreen.

Mine passed the MOT yesterday with just an advisory on slight damage to a rear tyre tread.

The invoice also stated "tightened an air-con compressor bolt - no charge" and "re-fixed front brake pad wear sensor - chargeable", odd.

Mine's had to have all four CV gaiters done to pass recent MoTs, but it is on 103k! SWMBO's has never failed, but has had advisories on tyres (which I knew about, but was getting done somewhere else) and exhaust backbox (which was rusty due to nine years of pretty low mileage)
