Removing middle rear seatbelt - will it fail an MOT?

Featured Replies

My Vrs failed it's MOT last time on a jammed rear seatbelt, got it unjammed and it passed, only to jam again! Does this whenever I put rear seat down, mechanic sayas he can't unjam it and a new tensioner would cost about £100.

I never use the middle seatbelt, so as pay £100, I was thinking of just removing it before the MOT. Would it fail it's MOT if it didn't have a middle rear seatbelt, and was therefore not as standard?

Technically - yes.

It's declared as a 5 seater so needs 5 seatbelts.

However you could go to a scrapyard and get a middle lapbelt from a different car ( no tensioner - no issues)

Take the rear seats out, pass.

As above, takes all of 30 seconds too!

As above. Just remember to take out the seats, and belts! Will pass.

Its like he spare wheel, it can fail for a bald spare wheel, but cant fail for not having a spare wheel in the 1st place :)

This has been discussed before, and ISTR that as long there were two functional seatbelts between the three rear seats, you were OK. Whether this would require the removal of the faulty belt would probably depend on how much of a stickler the tester was.

It's all here:

(Do <Ctrl+F> for 'Three rear seats or any of below' )

Take the rear seats out, pass.

Don't believe this, my MOT tester has just rung up and mine has failed on this today. He said if he hadn't already failed it on the centre belt, then I could've removed it before testing and it would've passed. But now that he has failed it, it has to be repaired/replaced. Although he did say a lapbelt would be OK! So I might try and 'borrow' the other half's one out of her Golf just to get a pass!

Update, got the car home, removed the O/s section of rear seat and found the pivot bolt had unscrewed. As soon as the back rest was stood upright the belt was fine, refitted the pivot bolt and all is well. Not have 12 months ticket!
