The sunroof blind's life of its own

Featured Replies

For the life of me I cannot figure out the trigger that closes the sunroof blind automatically. It does not happen just at night. It does not happen after hours and hours of standing either. Mine has now automatically closed when I had left the car for a mere 15 minutes and the outside temperature was 8 degrees!!!!!!! It has also closed itself in broad daylight now! Eh?

It is normally closed in the morning when I get in the car and that makes sense. The blind is a fairly solid thing if you look at it and it traps a fair amount of air between that and the sunroof glass creating a huge "double glazed window" to keep the car warm(er). So I totally get why it happens, but why does it want to trap heat in my car if the outside temperature is as warm as 8 degrees?! And if it closed within 15 minutes of me leaving the car the interior temperature in the car was well above 8 degrees as I had been driving for a fair bit before stopping. So the trigger does not seem to be when the interior temperature falls below the exterior temperature...

Has anyone worked out what the parameters for its closure is?

As far as I know (and from experience with my own car) the only thing that closes the sunroof blind is:

-Rainclose activated in Maxi-Dot

When this function is activated, the BCM/comfort module will send a "close signal" to all door control units, and the roof module when it recieves a signal from the rain/light sensor about moisture on the windscreen being registered.

The BCM/Comfort module will also tell the door control units and the roof module to close all windows/roof after around 12 hours regardless of if it's raining or not IF the rain close function is activated.

I have never read anything about that it has anything to do with temperature..

Ah.... I can't remember if it was raining or not when it happened after that 15 minutes! emoticon-0136-giggle.gif OK I will look out in future for that. It does make sense that it is to do with rain. Thanks JonA.

I knew there was a reason why I didn't order a sunroof........(other than Skoda not letting meemoticon-0140-rofl.gif)

Hi there,

Had mine for over a year and love the sunroof. From experiance, the blind closes in any kind of cool weather (insulating, as you say) and also on any bright days (I am assuming this is a 'keeping cool' feature, but don't know what measured parameter actually kicks it off).

Sorry not to be of more help.

I reckon it is definitely interior temperature related having studied it for 12 months in all four seasons.

It only took me 10 months to suss out that if you tap the blind open/closed button it goes all the way by itself, hold a digit on it and it stops moving in any position as soon as you release it (and even James didn't know that.... emoticon-0136-giggle.gif )

Here in Norway, my car has been parked outside in temperatures from around 0 C down to -29 C since I unticked the "rain close" box in the Maxi Dot meny. I do this before winter sets in to avoid battery drain. The sun blind in my car hasn't moved once.. The same applies to our demonstrator cars at work.

I read quite a bit of repair litterature/workshop manuals because of what I do for a living (Skoda technichian) and I have not seen anything mentioned anywhere that temperature has anything to do with the rainclose feature.

The glass used in the panorama roof is supposed to keep most of the sun generated heat out in the summer, and is also designed to keep the cold out during winter. I do agree that the sun blind does help in keeping the cabin cool when the sun is high in summer, but I highly doubt that a thin flimsy piece of cloth with holes in it will help much in keeping the cabin warm during the winter..

:)

Had this discussion way back in the early days and as JonA states appears the only way to stop it is the rain close option from memory.

I remember you mentioning it first time around thus from the beginning I thankfully knew that it was a one press-goes-all-the-way affair!

Having done loads of short journeys today and every time its closed itself, changed the rain close through Maxdoti and so far its stayed open.

good news :)

I'm sure that the master control over the roof blind is the rainman setting on the Maxidot - but it isn't only rain activated, I can assure you of that.

When I get a minute, I'll open the blind and pour some rain on the sensor and see what happens. emoticon-0144-nod.gif

since changing the settings in maxidot, not had to open the blind once!

Well I have now deactivated the auto rain close feature. And I can now confirm there is NO 12 hour auto close function. The roof blind never closes on its own accord anymore and I've left the car alone for over 36 hours in one trot now (how did I manage?!) and the blind was still open! Yippee.

Maybe in the summer when I start to park the car with the roof on tilt (to let warm air out) I'll activate the rain sensing feature again, but not before.

I tend to close the sunroof every time on the key whenI leave the car. On my Octy when I left the sunroof open and the car locked the burglar alarm used to go off. Also have not yet managed to get the sunroof to close when it starts raining without getting quite wet. How wet does it need to be to activate?

Not much actually. I've left my car in slight drizzle to return with the blind having closed. It takes the exact same amount of sensing as to activate your auto wipers. No idea if the wiper's sensitivity setting on the stalk will then also adjust the sensitivity of the roof closure?

Ah, now that's a thought. If you leave the wipers in the most sensitive setting it should close in slight drizzle. I'll try that, I suppose it's obvious really
