Sound deadening

Featured Replies

OK, several points to this question, so bear with me...

Firstly, does anybody know of relative weakspots in sound deadening on the Fabia vRS - either places where there is none and it could do with it, or places where there is some but it could do with more / better stuff? TBH I can't seem to find much of it anywhere...

Next, has anybody used this stuff?

Looks quite good and cheaper than dynamat. Not as cheap once you've added postage as Aquaseal / Marley Tape / Flashing tape / whatever other names it goes by, but looks less hassle to fit and allegedly gives better results.

I've heard mixed opinins on flashing tape, anybody know for definite if there's a marked difference between it and Dynamat etc?

Also, anybody used sound deadening felt in their installs? So far my efforts are limited to the floor and sides of the boot, that have been covered in flashing tape then rubberised felt (except for the wheel well itself which is just flashing tape'd) and this appears to have done a fair job of restricting the subwoofer sound from escaping the boot (didn't stop it from getting nicked though  ) so when the replacement system goes in I want to insulate the sound as much as I can. My stereo's for me, not for anyone outside the car to get ideas about... But at the same time, it would be nice to reduce the diesel chatter. I was thinking that insulating the firewall and front footwells as much as possible might help to reduce engine noise, what do you reckon and what material would be best for the job?

Questions, questions, questions...

P.S. whilst I do what to make the car as quiet as possible, I'm not planning on removing the whole dashboard or headlining or anything silly... :D

I've used this stuff to great effect.

I used 3 packs of 5 sheets just in the boot (not got to the doors yet).

But crank the sub up and you can't even hear it from the outside, very impressive!

And much much cheaper than Dynamat.

Might give it a shot. How thick is it, and is it waterproof for use on outer door skins etc?

Think I'll definitely be giving the firewall a dose of it. Especially after hearing the V6 on my Scimitar fire up this week, the diesel chatter just doesn't do it for me

Hehe

If you look at my post on changing speakers in the front doors on the furby, you'll notice some black stuff inside the door ;)

Yes, it does make a difference. I did the front doors and the boot in full. I took the spare wheel out, took the carpet out from the sides of the wheel arches and put one thickness all around.

To help you get it in small places / get in more flexible, a hot air gun does wonders too ;)

Vinyl tile insulation used on my front doors - got plenty of spare to lather other areas. Good thing with the insulation was I could trim it to tiny sizes and get in areas I wanted, like where the door card edges meet the metal of the door, etc etc. Here's how one door looked once I finished taping up some of this stuff. :D Looks a little crude but when its all hidden away I don't care. There's only bit left to pad out and thats the crossovers in the door pockets. They still reverberate a little bit when those woofers crank up loud. :o

would the stuff be better on the inside of the outer skin rather an the inner skin??

just wondering as i would like to do all this in my eventual big remake of my install

For definative advice & also some interesting other products try Steve at

I've tried this and yes it works :D . Put 2 layers of flashing tape on the outer skin plus one layer of this stuff. Also got 4 layers of flashing tape on the inner door panel. The door skin is now rock hard and the sound from my JBL's are much better. I'd say one layer of this stuff is about the same as 3-4 layers of flashing tape.

I have recently used exactly this stuff to sound deaden the doors in my Octy VRS. I have Focal Utopia 165W's fitted and they would literally shak ethe doors to bits when cranked up, lined the door card, the door outer skin and the inner skin as well as lining the existing speaker mounts ( you dont need MDF speaker rings, just use this liberally..... The difference was amazing, it it like I have a large Sub fitted! as for the vibrations....Gone

How much did you use? I'm thinking of attacking the front doors, maybe the backs if I feel like it, and front footwells / firewall

I bought two packs ( 20 sheets) and I have 6 left, I will be putting this on the rear door outer skins as it also has the added bonus that it reduces road noise in the cabin. If you do go for it, a little tip when fitting is to warm it up slightly, I did it in the oven on 50 degrees and it becomes very pliable and sticks like mad to anything it touches. If you can get together an order for 10 packs or more the p & p is free, maybe a GB with Skodi RS????
