Hi there, I have a Skoda Fabia 1.9 TDI, recently it has been reving on start up to around two thousand revs then dies back down to normal tic over. If the car sits ticking over for any length of time the revs will pick up and sit at just above one thousand revs, this usually sorts itself out and the revs return to normal, I sometimes stamp on the throttle and give oit a good rev, this restores normality as well. This is not an everyday occurance and maybe happens a couple of times a week.

Anyone have any ideas? Any help would be great.

My vRS does this, as far as i know its just 'a sticky pedal'... If this is the case then it's nothing to worry about. Instead of revving the tits off it, try lifting the pedal up (foot under the pedal).

I'm not sure... but sounds like it could be the coolant temp sensor making it run rich. normally a 1.4 petrol problem though.

EDIT: Sticky pedal above sounds more likely.

My first instinct would be the MAF sensor acting up. It's next to the air filter housing, sticking out of the air hose, about 1/2" to the left of the 'S' in 'Screen Wash' in the top picture on this site:

Disconnect that, and see if it makes any difference if you go for a short drive. If it DOESN'T, then that's probably what's up!

My octavia acted like this when the coolant temp sensor was duff. Does yours have the original grey one or the newer green version? If it's grey I would look to change the sensor. It may also have logged a fault code.

Fabias' CTSes are all grey, as they're only two-pin. Intermittent, total failure should result in the temperature gauge staying at 'cold' some of the time. and incipient failure should throw up a glowplug warning light - HTH

I assumed it was the same as the octavia. Mine used to show an error code only intermittantly though, as I suspect the high revs were caused by the sensor reporting the wrong temperature but within the plausible range.

This makes alot of sense, the temp gauge does not move, would this effect the fuel consumption too? Temp gauge will move if car has been running in slow moving traffic for a great length of time.

I have only owned the car for a short while and it has been sub zero here since I bought it, I have always been quite dissapointed with the heaters but put this down to the outside temp being so low. Can this damage my car running it like this? How much is a sensor roughly, I could pick one up tomorrow, keen to get this fixed as back to uni on Monday and that means daily 130 mile commute. Is there anyway of testing the sensor? I have had no warning lights coming up on the dash. Sorry for being a pest.

Is your Octavia diesel? where would I find the CT Sensor?

its a sensor that measures how much air is going into the engine, then sends this info to the ECU which then decides how much fuel to add as a result.

If the temperature only rises when stuck in traffic, this might indicate a busted thermostat rather than sensor, but the location of the sensor is in the guide I posted above. Around 30 quid for a new one from the dealer; less from a factor or eBay...

Had the Fabia hooked up today and it has two faults logged, one for the boost valve and one for an intermitting fault on the ct sensor. Ordered a ct sensor and thermostat and will get them fitted on Friday (first free day I have) I found two small pipes haning loose, one at the back of the bulkhead which joins to another pipe wihch drops down the bulkhead at the right hand side of the engine bay, this was a very narrow pipe and I dont know what this was? ( any suggestions) The other loose pipe went onto a small fitting on the air filter housing, something to do with airflow. Typically, the car behaved itself all the time I was at the garage.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what these pipes are for or what the boost valve fault reading means, I would love to know.

The pipe you haven't identified sounds like the one for the rear washer! :thumbup:

That makes sense as this stopped working about a week ago.

Thanks for all your help, I will update when I have the new parts fitted. Temp gauge was quite erratic today on a long drive, heaters were great though.

New water temp sensor fitted, car behaving its self again, thermostat fitted too just as a precaution, bugger to get it to seal again, and what a stupid place to put it!!!!! I had the housing on the side of the block dismantled looking for it, lol. Ended phoneing a Skoda garage to tell me where it was ha ha.

Learning all the time!!!
