Projector headlights and upgrade bulbs

Featured Replies

Looking for opinions please.

Certainly in my mk 1 Fabia vRS, putting in Upgraded Philips extreme power H7 halogen bulbs made a noticeable difference on the road.

I'm less impressed now the same bulbs are in my FL Octavia vRS in their projector headlights. Maybe, I'm imagining it.

Any reasons that these bulbs would be less effective in projector headlights?

None at all, upgraded bulbs will offer the same level of enhancement as you'd find when fitted to a rear reflector or Fresnel type lamp. With the projector style lamp, you have a fairly sharp beam cutoff which you don't get with the more traditional lamp types. this might give the impression of less light being thrown onto the road perhaps.

I found the same thing. The lights on my old Fabia were reflector type and perfectly adequate with standard bulbs. I have a Fabia Greenline now with the projector type headlights. These have a dismal output by comparison so I upgraded with Phillips xtreme bulbs (H7). There was a marked improvement but they are still now only about as good as my old Fabia which used a standard bulb.

The cutoff for dip beam is very defined, I prefer the 'phasing out gently' created by a standard reflector type. Main beam with the projector lights is not imo equivalent to main beam on a standard reflector type light......its worse.

You could upgrade to HID as these are designed to be installed to a projector type lens. Technically this is illegal as they have to be self levelling and have washers.....Many people do this and still pass MOT but its up to the individual. Personally I wouldnt.
