Octavia Vrs mk1 v mk2 & ABS

Featured Replies

Hi. We've been driving the Octavia Vrs for a while now, with the mk 1 still bravely coping with deep snow and now at over 165000 miles, still starting first time on its original battery. Husband bought a mk 2, new in Oct 2006 but it's not enjoyed the winter weather so much - now we are told it needs a new ABS control unit at £1500. I don't want to tempt fate, but my memories of older cars (years of "bangers") tell me that it should be the mk 1 that could be having failures, not the mk 2!

We both drive both cars. Anyone else in a position to do a direct comparison?

My personal feeling is the mk 1 is more fun, more responsive and looks "more of a beast"!

Regards to all

I presume forom what you have said the mk2 vRS may have the ABS light on. Is that correct? Last year the ABS light came my wifes Yaris had the ABS light come on meaning the ABS was no longer working, and as she didn't feel comfortable driving it like that in the snow I took it to the local dealer. They looked at it for a short while and said that it looked likely that the ABS control unit would need replacing as no other faults were showing. Took it to a local garage who looked at it and found one of the ABS sensors was smashed. Not sure how it happened but replaced it and bingo ABS now working perfectly.

So Intead of around £1500 it was £150 - £200, can't remember the exact figure.

Maybe is the same on your car. Certainly they should get the wheels off and check all the sensors instead of just nelieving the computer.

Hello and welcome BTW.

Yes the light came on. Local ex-Skoda dealer could not read the diagnostic. So we had to go to the only main dealer - £70 just to do the diagnostic.

I agree it is often an over-enthusiastic sensor. When Tesco were selling contaminated petrol all the local Skodas had their "engine management" lights come on. The fuel was causing a false reading. After the first 3 or 4 times we just ignored them - Tesco got their act together and all was well. Similarly we have had a dashboard warning -brake light up, when it was a new sensor needed, not the brake.

This time it seems the ABS unit is actually faulty, and known to be so. However it is true that with the snow we have had some bad road conditions. If a sensor had been damaged they should have spotted it .. I'll check they looked!

Thanks.

Ouch that's steep just to do the check. The local Toyota dealer spent nearly an hour looking at the wifes Yaris, having battery in and out, trying to reset it and charged me the nice sum of nothing....

HI and welcome aboard.
