Reset CD/DVD burner without rebooting PC?

Featured Replies

Ocasionally, when I burn a DVD-R, nero seems to "hang" when writing the lead out. It just sits there, disc is still spinning in drive, drive burn light still on.

You can't "cancel" the burn, nor shut down nero to "free" the drive up. The only way I can think of to fix it is to reboot the PC which resets the drive.

Is there any windows software that sends a "reset" signal down the cable? It's a pain having to reboot the PC causing everyone to be bumpbed off my ftp server :(

Or, any ideas what could be causing it?

Running WinXP Pro, SP2. Drive is a Pioneer A05 with patched firmware to make it RPC-0

Have you checked for updates for Nero?

Adaptec's software used to stick at 99% on my work PC til I updated it....

I had the same problem with Nero and DVD-R hanging at the write out phase but I found that the DVD's had sometimes burned OK. You can usually shut it down using ctrl/alt delete (Hold ctrl and Alt down at the same time and then press Del - also known as the 3 fingered salute), highlight Nero and then click on End Task.

I find that writing DVD's with Nero is a very hit and miss affair and have accumulated lots of shiny beer mats!

also may be worth doing control alt del, clicking processes and ending IMAPI process too - this usually locks the drive for any further burning unless you reboot.

Get updates for it - sounds like a problem which happened a lot to older burners. Also worth checking for firmware updates for the burner itself

I used to suffer this occasionally.

A Nero Update fixed it :)

Hmm. was running nero 6.6.0.1 Just updated to 6.6.0.6. Will keep posted if any more occurs.

You cannot Ctrl+alt+del out of it. The drive is "locked", even once Nero closes. The eject button doesn't do anything. The only I found of getting the disc out (which is ok most of the time) is to reboot the PC which of course reboots the IDE bus and drive.

Only other way I can think of is to disable the hardware in device manager and re-enabling it. But even then I'd be surprised if that fixed it.
