Additive or "flow improver"

Featured Replies

While relaxing with a suitable glass of wine for the occasion I was browsing my Greenlines owners manual.

Specifically page 177 regarding diesel fuel.

It states " You must not use fuel additives, so-called "flow improvers" (petrol and similar products) in diesel fuel"

Flow improvers are a specific form of additive usually used in winter to assist the flow of fuel and prevent freezing/gelling of the fuel. This is entirely different to say Forte or Millers additives for system cleaning and in the case of Millers Cetane raising. Its seems to me that the handbook is actually saying dont use flow improvers as an additive rather than all types of additive. If this were the case it would say do not use fuel additives 'or' flow improvers. It even mentions petrol specifically as a no no but seems directed as a flow type product.

I am not interested in the effectivness of additives be it Millers, Redex, snake oil or otherwise. I would like others opinion on how they interpret the wording in the manual.

I have no intention of using any additives, at least not during the warranty period.

This post isnt about the goods, bads, pitfalls or any of the other opinions on additives. Its just about the interpretation of the handbook wording

You have read it the way I do, it only refers to Flow improvers, these are however added to pump fuel in the winter but the ammount has to conform to the pump specs ie EN590. This spec also allows for the 7% Bio addition.

I used Redex in all my petrol vehicles for many years later using marine 2T oil instead. I still use Millers when not able to get BP Ultra or Shell V Power. My Mk II Superb used in Cornwall rural town and the Summer traffic jams and a few motorway trips never had any warnings regarding DPF, unlike many reports in the Forum, I put this down to type of fuel used.

Thanks for the response Spectrum. I am pleased that someone agrees with my interpretation of the handbook. Not entirely sure Skoda read it that way.

Redex ! . I still use it in my motorcycle. If 2 stroke oil is just as effective I might give it a go. I have loads of it as I use it in my boats outboard. Redex is basically naptha so maybe 2 stroke has naptha.........Gone way off topic here, sorry about that

Hi Raisbeck, Spectrum, yep...I read it like you two. No flow improvers. It's fairly common practice for techs to put Millers or some such fuel additive into a diesel engine at service if it is a little smokey. That's quite essential for most of us at some point, even on petrol engines. It sure cures it. Flow improvers though, not recommended in my day as a tech. A lot of people do believe that you should never put anything in the fuel. Like you Raisbeck I use Redex in my motorcycles at least once a year. Wonderful stuff. For some reason, manufacturers don't seem to like us doing it though, yet send out bulletins to the techs to say put it in on service if needed. It could just be manufacturers don't trust the public (us) with dosing the engine correctly I guess.:o
