DIY pop-up Garmin Sat Nav

Featured Replies

I've been trying to think of ways to mount my Garmin sat nav on or around my dash, as I hate sticking things to the windscreen.

In my previous car I used the black shiny disc that Garmin provide to stick onto the dash, but this needs an area of flatness and Octavia's dash is curved everywhere you would want to put it.

So I had an idea of creating some way of holding the sat nav using the door on the storage compartment on the top of the dash.

I also wanted it to be semi permanent so that I could hide it away (not on show for any scum-bags) but ready to pop up when needed, but also let me take it out of the car when ever needed. I also didn't want make any holes etc into the dash anywhere.

So out came the velcro! Quickly realised that the design I was going with needed some rigidity, so some plastic from an old DVD was liberated.

After a few changes to the dimensions because the two sided hinge needed to be the right size so that the units screen was at the right angle but also let things lay in the compartment flat so the door could close. The great thing with velcro is that can be adjusted as needed.

Here's prototype 1, what do you think is there anything I could do/change to make things better?

P1110008.jpgWhenclosing the hatch you just need to push the sat nav on the top edge with your thumb so it goes to the back corner of the compartment to let it close.

Looks great, maybe you could show people the hinge in more detail and dimensions. Really like it though and at an ideal height to view too.

Not a bad idea at all. I like using the storage box for other loose things though, so I'll stick with my simple Brodit mount solution to the left of the stereo. Does me fine, but can understand why people would follow this route.

Definitely get it hardwired if you can. It's pretty easy to get the power lead to the back of the storage box then just drill/Dremel a small hole in the corner. Won't be noticeable.

Nice work, simple, cheap, effective! I like

Out of interest, how do you get the Skoda logo on it, is it linked to the Bolero? Also is the Bolero a retro fit as the display doesn't seem very bright, a problem I had previously.

Nice job - looks good that. And also allows the option of connecting any USB device that needs power

I too have a 'Skoda Navigation' splash screen on my TT Go 730T. Not sure about the Garmin, but for that it just involved overwriting the default one on the device's internal memory. In fact the TT Windows software now makes it even easier.

Any idea how much the trim with a lid would cost from the sealers, mine does not have a lid

If I get chance in the day time I will take the velcro apart and take some photos, I cut the plastic/velcro by eye, but if anyone wants me to take some dimensions just let me know.

The Garmin is totally seperate to the Bolero, all you do is save a jpeg to the Garmin's internal memory then set it as the start up screen.

I think the light didn't do the Bolero justice (factory fitted), I've no problem with the brightness of the screen.

By the way, I love the frosted glass.........but how do you see? :giggle:

He uses the sat nav

He uses the sat nav

Took a few more photos today so you can see the details a bit more clearly

Firstly I put a strip of velcro on the back of the Garmin unit

Then it took a little while to find the right place for the velcro on the underside of the door, but its bottom edge seems to run along the mould line you can see

Then I constructed a double hinge with the centre section rigid so it would hold the garmin unit at the right angle, as per my previous pictures

The only problem now is that with all the in and out and then things being pulled out so the guy could put the cable in from the back of the compartment, the velcro is already starting to look a little worn out, not as stiff as before. What I might do for my second prototype is make the 3 section hinge more rigid with some more plastic
