fun emissions

Featured Replies

Just got a 1.6 aee fun. Was described as engine needs replacing, Ok have a tdi, loom and ecu ready. Drove it back, a few issues apparent but very quick. Seems a shame to replace the lump. No blue or black smoke but that grey you get if there`s much too much oil in it but no hydraulicing. Put it on emission tester and failed on everything. Possibly the oil is absorbing fuel as the level was very high. No smoky back pressure. Before the bodging or new rings(?) begins, anybody experienced this and got a result?.

Oil smoke is blue, retired MV Tech.

Sounds like it might be similar to how mine was when I got it (running a bit rough and drinking oil at quite a rate, but not obviously smoky). Is there noticeable oil in the crankcase breather/intake/throttle body? If so the pop the oil separator off the back of the block and check the top hole (or the whole thing) isn't clogged up. Valve stem oil seals are supposedly a potential weak point too.

hey rolo.. hope the other tdi project is going smooth?

has this fun bus been sat up for a while? these 1600 engines are well known for the rings siezing into the piston ring lands when they dont get used for ages..

can you chuck your emissions results up so i can get a better idea of what's what.. it may not be burning oil at all, might just be running rich

Both t3 and caddy mtdi projects progressing ok,, another improved, very heavy duty clutch is in the making, The all new disc brake upgrade certainly improves the caddy2 pickup. Got a non running diesel cube a couple of months ago, made it run and done some miles in it. Had a spare tdi with an engine loom sorted so was goin to put it in. Then saw the fun advertised so went to look and ended up driving it back.

Anyway back to now. Got no print out as it was afreebie, but saw what was what. Drained the too much oil and was waiting for another go on the emission machine when noticed the hc sniffer so stuck it it the header tank and got a reading similar to exhaust. Head gasket, methinks, which was my first thought but changed mind as no water in oil and no pressurising. Will whip head off for a look.

Thanks for replies folks hopefully this isn`t just the beginning of a saga. cheers rolo

was at one yesterday, just too late, most of it was gone, got 2 new wings the day after I`d spent 2hrs in a yard carefully removing a pair for the same money and another rear light at right price.

the beam was there but I don`t know whether he`ll let it go he was talking of towing it to the scrapyard round the corner but will ask if you`re interested

Fun is now tested and is.

Thunderbird 4 is currently running at:

this crossed my mind today. the fun is good on fuel. not as good as any of the diesels (tdi, mtdi, sdi,td) but close and with the difference in fuel price can`t be much difference economically, delete economically and replace with cost,

The current stats are

Thunderbird 4 runs at approx 14 pence per mile, Thunderbird 1 (an 04 Mk1 Focus Ghia 1.8 TDCi) runs at approx 11 pence per mile / 50mpg. The Fun costs me about £12.50 extra a week to run (400 mile working week), but during the summer, with the Truckman off, the wall and windows open, it sure as hell is worth it! :):):):):)
