256mm conversion for the rear?/Bleeding brakes requiring VAGCOM?

Featured Replies

Do I require different brake hoses for this conversion?

Gut feeling's saying no, however....................Gotta be sure!

Also, while fitting braided brake lines, I'm gonna need to bleed the brakes again........Can I bleed the brakes without having to use VAGCOM to talk to the ABS system?

No for the lines.

And no you don't need vagcom as long as you don't let the level empty out in the reservoir.

Pressure bleeder is a good idea.

Just make sure you don't get them from a 4wd car.

Thanks for the advice! Saves me a bit of money then.

Any particular pressure bleeder? Is there a specific thread on the top of the reservoir?

Also, I'm hoping it won't lose all the fluid while doing four lines, reckon I'll be fine?

AFAIK it's pretty straightforward to fit the 4wd ones with spacers? I have a set here waiting to go on and got them from a chap who had them on his Leon. He gave me the spacers to go with them.

I tried the same spacers with the 256s I got from an Audi S3 - They still wouldn't fit. Not even close either. I ended up quitting and getting octy vRS ones instead.

Hmmmm, wonder how they fitted to the Leon? What was the problem you had?

The alignment is slightly different on the Leon to the Fabia, I like Jason tried fitting 4wd ages ago and the disc hits the carrier and the spacers dont adjust the alignment that way. You have to grind a chunk out of the carrier which I wasnt happy with so got 2wd carriers when doing the Fabia estate and my Ibiza.

So the disc is presumably sitting relatively further inboard then? Sorry, I'm just trying to figure out how exactly the alignment differs - like what is in a different place and in which way is it differently located? I take it I'm looking at getting a set of 2wd carriers then. I'd like to be able to get them fittable without any more expense if possible and I have access to a milling machine etc if there is a way to modify it safely. Otherwise I guess I'll just advertise them on E38 or something and leave it for now. It's weird, I was sure I'd seen a thing saying there wasn't much involved other than the spacers to get the 4wd brakes to fit.

It is straight forward on a Leon or a Golf but not a Fabia or Ibiza.

The centre groove if you like where the disc sits in the carrier rubs on the disc itself like the caliper carrier isn't out far enough towards the edge of the disc.

Oh well, looks like it'll be on to E38 then. Thanks guys, just saved myself what sounds like a world of ballache.

standard hoses are braided.

As I understand they're not stainless braided though?

  • 1 month later...

EDIT: Never mind.
