Parking Sensors Not Working

Featured Replies

Hi,

With the recent harsh weather, my rear parking sensors stopped working a few weeks ago. When reverse is engaged, it gives the long tone for a few seconds and then turns off.

I read on a previous thread that when reverse is engaged with the ignition on (engine off), you can hold your ear up against each sensor and you'll hear a clicking so the one not clicking is the culprit.

I did this earlier today and only 1 out of the 4 was clicking. Any ideas on if it's likely that 3 sensors could pack in all at the same time or should I be looking for another problem with wiring, controller etc?

The first thing to do is check the plug where the sensors connect to the car. The control box for this is behind the boot carpet on the left side of the boot as you look into it from the back of the car. You'll have to take the shopping bag hook and I think one more screw and the boot light off to remove the carpet at this side. It'll be fitted in the corner behind the wheel arch. If there's nothing obviously wrong there, then I'd recommend learning to park without them as sensors aren't cheap and probably the only guaranteed fix is to fit a new wiring loom and sensors.

On my car the whole back bumper needs to come off before you can get at the sensors properly (Some people have been able to get at the sensors by reaching around behind the bumper, but this doesn't work on my car). And the tail lights need to come off before you can get the bumper off, so it's several hundred pounds in parts and more in labour to get it sorted. If you replace one part at a time of course the labour gets ridiculous pretty quickly as the bumper comes off each time.

The fault my sensors give for example is a ground fault, basically they're earthing somewhere they shouldn't be due more than likely to the insulation on the wires to the sensors being damaged. The wiring runs under the lip of the boot, so there's plenty of chance for it to get damaged over time as things are loaded and unloaded from the car. The sensors work reasonably consistently for a few days a year when the weather is very hot (Not necessarily dry) strangely.

Thanks............sounds like a little nightmare to fix.

I'm in the same boat as you, I can see no way to get behind the bumper from underneath to see if they are all plugged in. However as three sensors don't appear to work I suspect more of a problem like an earth...............maybe a job for a summers day!

On factory fit ones you can test the sensors through the diagnostic port on most cars.

Dougall, your sig says you have a 2012 car. If so, take it back & have Skoda solve the problem under warranty!
