Petrol Fabia v Octavia Diesel

Featured Replies

I've got a brand new 51kW Fabia petrol on loan for a few days ,while my Octavia 140 has a new turbo under warranty.

Last time I ran a petrol car on my daily 24 mile commute, 37 mpg was the norm.

The Fabia is getting 42mpg uphill to Buxton and 55mpg downhill (on computer thingy) to Chesterfield. At the moment the Octavia is doing 44mpg and up to 60mpg respectively. Speeds are constrained by other traffic both ways and I go with the flow.

I know that is a short and inaccurate comparison but am very impressed with the mpg of the 5 speed HTP engine. Certainly it does not have huge hill climbing grunt ,but is adequate and much faster than the 1.2l Corsa slug and almost as quick as SWMBO 1.4l Getz.

Well, the 3 main reasons I have an Octy diesel are:-

1) Boot space

2) Torque

3) Torque

I wouldnt ever take the computer display as an indication of the economy of modern cars, like manufacturer brochure claims these are optimistic, but unlike the brochure claims there are a tad closer & no where near the realms of fantasy that is written down.

I always go for trip miles & fill to 1st click of pump, calculate this way. by doing this you will get a better idea, if its worth trading to a petrol Fabia next emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

I downsized from a Octavia L&K 2.00 DSG Diesel when I moved up north as I would not be doing such a high mileage

I drove the Octavia in Manchester traffic for about 4 months and achieved about 42 MPG

My Fabia 1.2 105 DSG Estate from new is achieving around 36 MPG but has only done 750 miles and most of that was in ice and snow

Once the engine is a bit looser and the weather improves I would expect to achieve a higher MPG

Yes it is a bit slower on acceleration but easily lived with

Boot space well I did go for the estate as I felt the Hatch was a bit to small

So far it has coped with everything I have thrown into it

Hope that helps
