SGS

Pros:

Front facing camera (not that much of a biggie really)

High performance (better than Desire)

Big and better screen

Wireless N

Cons:

Plasticy

Samsung (from past experience of Samsung, maybe they got better?)

Desire

Pros:

Feels well built (physically)

Flash on camera

Cons:

'safe' default option.

UI does not matter as I will take it to the nth level lol. My Hero's on 2.2.1 and if it had updated kernal I would stick with it.

SGS - GPS issue has been solved.

I think my main concern for going with SGS is the (lack of) robustness of it. Or so it seems.. Maybe I am wrong? Opinions pleasee...

I've had both and while the SGS screen is fantastic, the plastic case doesn't handle being dropped too well.

Don't forget about the inherent Samsung software problems.

Software wise should be ok bcos I'll most likely end up rooting it etc etc. Like you say Im more worried it wont survive a drop.. Will a silicon cover be enough do you think?

I've got one on my Desire as a direct result of not having one on the Galaxy so I would always say yes.

I couldn't set up the Samsung software reliably and I think some of it was needed for added functionality.

I've had a qiuck play with a SGS and didn't like it. I found it sow and jerky!

Also very plasticy.

I have a hard gel case on my desire (the official HTC one) and i have dropped it a few times and it has come off without a mark on it!

Deffo go for the desire IMO.

If you took the software out of the Desire into the Galaxy S (Which is what I will be doing if I bought the SGS), would people still prefer the Desire? Even given the pro/cons above?

At the time of having the SGS, apart from the plastic case issue, I'd also got the GPS problem and a Kies issue so it was certainly not going to be a keeper.

Since having the rooted Desire, I've enjoyed the benefits that come with modding it.

The extra real estate (and quality) of the SGS is a big pull but both phones could do with a personal one of these though.

Although I voted Desire, why is there not an option for DHD? :o

There seems to be a lot of common problems with the SGS, a mate is on his third one in a matter of months. Not as fast a turn over as Johnboy but still not good :D .

The only plus point I can think of on the SGS is the Bluetooth rSAP capability.

Currently DHD is bit out of budget. or rather, I don't want to spend that much and carry such a heavy phone :p

I've done a few more hours of research and SGS is a no go after all.. screen burn in and text reading are my main issues. I've kept my hero for 18months and expect it to last much longer. I expect my new phone to be the same if not better

Its no bigger/heavier than an iPhone 4 or a SGS for that matter. I'm assuming you're upgrading? I got a good deal on my DHD via upgrade. Anyway a desire would be my option if DHD is too much.

SGS ~100g and DHD ~170g (due to metallic casing) and Desire is about 130g? Yeah Im upgrading, but I have the friends and family for T-mob, so max I can take without forking out any money is about SGS or Desire 'level'. On the bright side.. ~£15pm, 18m contract, 900mins 600 text, free internet (& free booster), free phone  .

As for Iphone 4, I don't support mac's marketing (though clever) .
