VW Golf GT Tdi

Featured Replies

Guys,

Been looking for a replacement car for swmbo for a few months now without success (until now). She's not particularly fussy, it just had to be an 07-57 reg VW Golf GT Tdi preferably the 170, (my input) 5 door in red!! :o Ok, so thats a little specfic but hey ho, what swmbo wants and all that..................

Anyway, I have found one going at Autoquake in London, its a good price all things considered, its a 57 reg, in red, 5 doors 170bhp  but it has just over 57,000 miles on the clock. Now I know in the grand seem this isn't a massive amount, but I was hoping for a bit less, mainly due to the running costs that may be increased by the higher miles, eg requirements for the cambelt waterpump to be replaced, etc..........

So the questions are; when is it advisable to change the cambelt/water pump, I know for the petrol tfsi it is 50k or 4 years, also what are peoples experiences with the DPF?

Any other input would be appreciated.

If it helps. I have the 140 with charleston alloys, in black and 3dr. If you wish to come and take a look around it - Please do feel free.

I'm not going to lie, I didn't like the 170 and still have good power with the 140 and nice MPG alongside. Mine is on 54,000 miles and hasn't had any issues and still drives like new with a full VW service history. The Cambelt is done at 80,000 I was told - Still have to double check this.

If you have anymore questions - Please do post them up and I will try my best to answer them for you.

Hope this helps,

Rob.

I had one of these on hire for a few days and it was one of the most unpleasant cars I have ever had to drive. It seemed to have no suspention travel and was so stiff it just crashed from bump to bump.

It may have been quite fast, but overall was not worth the discomfort and I was very happy to revert to my 130bhp superb once it had been repaired.

80k for the cambelt and you can stretch it out to 5yrs no prob.

My dad has the TSI GT and that doesn't suffer any suspension issues. Believe me if it did then i would hear about it ;)

Personally, I would stick to a 4yr/60k regime, as per the PD130. You could argue on the mileage front, and raise that to 70-80k. The discussions seem endless on it.

But I wouldn't push it on the age side of things at all. It's often the belt tensioners that fail, rather than the belt itself.

How far can you push it? Impossible to answer; that's always the gamble. But I wouldn't take the risk.

Just my thoughts.

Cheers,

Steve

The VAG advised mileage is 80k....it is also 80k on my PD130 Bora...They changed the regime in 2004.

I'm used to a vRS lowered 30mm so I think it will be like driving on a cloud! :giggle:

Why didn't you like the 170 out of interest?

If you can find a PD140, I'd probably go for that over the 170 purely for the fact that running costs seem to be lower and there is now DPF.

For the mileage we do, running costs would be irrelevant....................and haven't you heard of a DPF delete pipe? I know swmbo hasn't :giggle:

We could move onto the injectors too if you like....

If you look at a JKM RR you'll find some of the PD170 that had been remapped at 190bhp ish and standard PD140's at 170ish BHP.

Keeping it standard will save plenty on the insurance an if it's your other half driving it then I doubt the extra 30bhp will matter (if there is such a gap).

Also if you're doing such low mileage, why even bother with a derv?

Jeepers, are you saying that completely standard 140's where achieving 170 bhp?

Although it will be her car, I will probably use it more as it is a replacement for the work horse, having said that, she may use it more as its new and I will get to play with my baby. Again as its her car, its also her choice, and she loves the Golf GT, we are also looking out for the 14 TSi GT but tbh both diesel or petrol seem to be rare.

If we were buying new, then it wouldn't be worth getting a diseasel, but 2nd hand there isn't really much difference in price.

p.s what about the injectors?

Not sure about JKM's rollers then! Were these BKD PD140s?

Don't know if there's some lucky owners out there, but my stage1 ran 183/298 on RS Tuning's rollers in Nov.

Indeed they were fully standard PD140 BKD.

For example:

FWIW I remember plenty of people saying they had around the 160-170 mark and on quite a few different sets of rollers.

From posts on here I believe there can be issues with injector and injector wiring on the PD170.

Magic from Germany seemed to post something about it too. A search on here should start you off.
