Potential new VRS owner, test drive impressions & questions

Featured Replies

Hi all,

New to the site. I have registered as I'm looking to buy a mkII vrs (pre facelift). I've just got back from a brief test drive and I have some questions and impressions I'd like to run pas you knowledgable lot if I may?!

The car I drove (was a bit of a dog, but it was round the corner from me so allowed me to drive one without having to travel far) seemed to stutter around 3.5k revs and the boost/delivery was lumpy until it warmed up. Is this normal or does it indicate a fault? The first time it came on boost the revs fell away dramatically like I'd hit a limiter, my Megane turbo (225) that I used to own restricted revs to 5.5k until it was warm, is this engine the same?

What is the epc warning light for? This lit as the power dropped off then cleared again.

Couldn't find the aux input in the jumbo box but I'm guessing as the car was on a 56 plate and has green calipers it probably won't have one?

Does maxidot occupy the bottom half of the display between the speedo and rev counter? This car seemed well specced (cruise, reversing sensors, jumbo, climate) but if it had maxidot I couldnt tell.

My general impressions of Octavia's after the test drive are very positive (even if this one was rough around the edges). Rides well, nice balance between ride quality and handling. Very well built, no rattles or squeaks or signs of major wear and tear despite being a 70k mile example. I can't believe how big the octy is!?! Massive boot, plenty of space front and rear, even with the seat set for my ideal drain position and I'm 6ft1". Once the engine warmed through it pulled strongly and smoothly without a great fuss, seemed to suit the cars character well. Didn't really getting a chance to lean on the handling but I know the well rated.

All in all it's exactly what I'm after, time to list the Clio 182 on pistonheads and start the search for a VRS in ernest!

Was definatley a dog! Front was stone chipped to hell but until today I've never been in a vrs or driven any car from the VAG group so the test drive served a purpose.

I'm in Brough, just outside Hull. Are you local to me?

Baildon in Bradford west Yorkshire bit of a trek ,but mine is mint you could have a go in mine.

EPC = Electronic Power Control warning (i.e. engine management warning light) and indicates a fault with the system - hence the stuttering and poor performance you noted.

Sounds like its not been looked after, avoid it if I were you.

Thanks for the maxidot pics, that clears that up, definitely wasn't equipped. No intnetion of persuing this one any further. Need to move my car on and then I can start looking properly.

And thanks for the offer of a test drive, I'll bear you in mind!

What car have you got at the moment ?

Renault sport Clio 182. Got a lot of history with renault, had a Clio 16v, 172, 182 & a 197 over the years, and a Megane 225. Need something a bit more pratical but fun at the same time, the Octavia seems ideal

Test drive a good one and you'll see that it revs very smoothly and quickly up to the red line with real urgency and pulls very well. You won't be disappointed.

Mine is 3.5 year on 41k miles still smooth as silk (on super) right through the rev range.

I've had no faults since new and only costs have been servicing, fuel and tyres.

It's practical and fast and it's very difficult to think of a better car for the same money.

Plenty about so I'd look out for a good one.
