Octy ABS Speed Sensor

Featured Replies

Hello

Went to the local garage a few weeks ago because of an ABS/Cruise control light problem. I have a fault code that says my drivers side front ABS speed sensor is faulty so rather than pay £70 quid at the stealers, I have found some online for £10-15. The part number is 1j0927804 and it keeps saying it is suitable up to 05 reg.

Mine is an Mark 2 05 plate 2.0 tdi elegance and I am confused if this will fit. I thought they stopped making mark 1s in 2004 so why do they say up to 05 plates?

Also if I do a DIY job will I need to go to a VAG garage to get the fault code reset afterwards?

Because some Mk1's will have been in the distribution chain after production had stopped and hence they will likely be some on '05 plates.

I changed the wheel speed sensors on my audi, and assuming the system is the same, the fault light will reset once you are moving above 10mph....assuming of course the fault is cured by changing the sensor.

(also check the positioning, the gap between the sensor and speed ring, and the connectors in the line too, just in case)

Mmmm, hubby is doing it and has never changed one before. He got the old one off a few months ago to see if it was dirty and put it back. Not sure he checked all those things. What's the speed ring?

Can I find out any more info online regarding replacing it? I thought it was quite a simple job.

Guess I will have to phone Skoda and check the part hasn't changed since the mark 1. Funnily enough there does not appear to be another part number so it must be the same one.

The 'speed ring' (AKA reluctor ring) is a toothed ring installed around the driveshaft. As the wheel rotates so does the toothed ring. As each tooth passes the ABS sensor it generates a pulse in the sensor, which is what the ABS electronics use to determine wheel speed.

Several things can go wrong.. The toothed ring can crack - which gives a low signal from the sensor. Dirt can build up on the ring, which weakens the sensor signal.

The best idea would be to check the resistance of the ABS sensor by connecting a multimeter (on 'Resistance' range) across the two terminals of the sensor. Compare the resistance with that of the 'good' sensor on the other side of the car. They should be within 10%. If not, then you have found your faulty sensor. If they ARE the same resistance then you need to look elsewhere for the source of your problem.

Its not a difficult job to replace the sensor, again assuming it is the sensor (very real possibility...they do fail)....they can be reluctant to leave their slot, but other than that....disconnect connector, undo screw holding sensor, remove sensor, clean slot out, refit new sensor, check gap between sensor tip and ring, reconnect....oh and refit wheel. ;)

Well we took the wheel off again the weekend to check the part number on the sensor and something nasty happened. Hubby noticed the wire about 2 inches from the sensor end was slightly damaged. It looked like it had been rubbing on something. When he pulled the sensor out of the hole the wire completely broke in 2!

So it looks like it may have been the wire after all and not the sensor. It has snapped in half just after the knuckle bit. We have made a temporary connection for the time being using a connector block and some black tape.

Can this just be soldered back together or do we have to have a whole new wire fitted? I have searched the net and can find no mention of the wire anywhere. It's a pity the knuckle part of the wire doesn't just pull apart so we would just have to replace that piece. Unfortunately it is all one piece.

You advice would be appreciated.

Can you get separate speed rings for Mk 2 Octavias?

I've looked into it and it appears the ring is built into the hub. New ring = new hub for £100 plus VAT.

Great - unless anyone knows better.

I've seen hubs on Ebay for £70 but these dont appear to have any sort of toothed wheel fitted. Are they magnetic now?
