HP Procurve managed switches - configuration tidiness

Featured Replies

We've started using HP Procurve switches at work, and whilst I'm slowly getting my head around configuring them at the CLI (having some Cisco IOS helps LOL), the configuration listing appears in the order in which it was typed / added.

With Cisco configs, the config is always sorted by interface number, so it's easy to find what you want.

Is there a way to re-order the configurations on the HP boxes? Unless you get it right first time, it ends up being a real mess!

We just configure ours using the web based gui, piece of cake and dead easy. http://ipaddress , bung in the default username and password and away you go.

Also worth downloading the HP Procurve manager app from hp, as it makes fault diagnosis easy.

Thanks Manny,

I tried the web gui but couldn't get on with it. Also, from Cisco experience, changes in the GUI often create subtle changes that you only see at the CLI level which is why I'd rather learn the nerdy way!

I've spoken to a Procurve HP expert and they've confirmed there's no autosorting available. This has been raised many times as an issue and has been passed on to the engineering team so a future firmware release will fix, but at the moment, looks like I'll have to overcome the mess created and work it out the hard way!

Looks like you've answered your own question anyway Xav - didn't think I'd seen a way of doing what you wanted...

Agree on the CLI too - I've had a few Procurve issues with doing things the GUI way - mainly VLAN and PoE related. The GUI's good for a fair bit of stuff, and has got better on ProCurve model lines over the years. But CLI config is still invaluable and in some cases the only way of doing things properly

I always found the Procurve CLI reasonable to use, as it's at least consistent across different levels of switch. I could never get the the Procurve manager to work properly, but that was some time ago and I suspect it's better now :)
