Hi... I'm New! (and need help!)

Featured Replies

Hello knowers of all Skoda related queries!!

(please bear in mind I'm no mechanic!!)

My Little Fabia VRS is poorly, been having a problem where it has lots of revs but no go!!

Skoda garage said proably a loose or split pipe, nothing too serious i thought...

my local garage (not a skoda garage, but know the car) have said it needs a new clutch, and when you do the clutch you need a new fly wheel too.

do I really need a new flywheel, they're really really expensive!!

plus my little girl is chipped (he he he 185bhp) is it worth getting a better clutch and any recommendations?

Thank in advance

Jenny

Sounds like clutch slip, so the garage are correct.

If it's been slipping a lot it'll have probably hot spotted the flywheel, so yes, best to change that too..

There are aftermarket clutch and flywheel options available, from standard dual mass flywheel and performance clutch kit to single mass lightened and balanced flywheels and clutch kits.

Thanks, Really hoped your weren't going to say that!! :-(

Been quoted around £700 for the works (exc Vat ) does that sounds reasonable, I trust the garage that are doing the works, but it's still alot of money!

Any recomendations for a better clutch, bearing in mind i don't really drive like a mad (wo)man is it really worth it, the standard one has lasted this long and she's been chipped since she was 6 months old!

Thanks

That's not a bad price for a standard clutch and flywheel fitted.

If the standard one has lasted this long then it hasn't done bad.. It's all personal preference though :)

Has it been serviced recently or have you topped it up with oil?

I spent 10,000 miles panicing that i'd need a new clutch as it seemed to be slipping badly.

However when it went in for it's next service i was told i'd over filled it with oil.

Service completed and correct amount of oil put back in and the "slip" went away instantly.

Draining some oil out is a much MUCH cheaper solution than a new clutch!

Thanks for the info,

Had it serviced at Skoda mid last year, only done around 5k since then, havent checked the oil so will give that a whirl later, although it has been ok up till about november time.

Thanks

if it was me and i needed a new clutch i would have an aftermarket clutch especially with it been remapped.

thanks for the replies..... just looking at some uprated clutches - any suggestions?

Do you how much torque you've got? I think a standard clutch is good for about 300ftlbs. I wouldn't know if your flywheel needs doing as well but the fine chaps at Unit18 (not too far from you) had my clutch replaced in 3 hours and for less than £400, that didn't include the flywheel tho.

I guess it depends on the price difference between an uprated one and standard but mine is mapped to about 175(ish) and just under 300ftlbs and the standard clutch is fine so far.

Driven with a bit of mechanical sympathy and you might save yourself a fair bit of cash.

HTH.
