Bought a second hand fabia - have been sent a letter from the Retaina Group asking to complete a change of ownership form with my details and pay a fee of £21! Is it worth while doing this? If they already have my details, why ask for £21 to add them to their database?!

Never heard of them!

Never heard of them!

I think they used to be called something different, but they're the keepers of the codes etched onto your window glass. Presumably the codes are more use for the police identifying ringers than they are for owners recovering stolen vehicles. I guess if you don't respond, they'll either wipe their data or keep the previous owner's details on their database...

Applied to 'Security Retaina' company soon after buying car from new, in year 2005.

At one time Skoda's were registered with this company from new, they no longer do this.

Well worth the money. Police use this as another check.

If you purchase a new vehicle well worth registering with them, it is about £24, this is the fee + a set of templates and etching fluid. It is simple to use and the templates can be used more than once although they don't tell you that. I etched all the windows on my Combi and all came out perfect.

If the vehicle is stolen all the windows have to be changed. The etching is too deep to polish out.
