All season tyres for 4X4 turbo

Featured Replies

Anyone bought all season tyres for a MK1 Octavia (205/55/R16)?

I don't want to pay for 2 sets of tyres (winter/summer) and am happy to compromise on an all season tyre.

I have found a very limited choice and based on reviews have come up with the following front runners:

Vredestein Quatrac 3's or Nokian WR G2 (although have not been able to track down a supplier of the Nokian's).

Anyone fitted either type and has an opinion please let me know.

Cheers.

Quatrac 3's are good but do you need all season tyres? I have run two winters on Hankook Evo 12's and never got stuck or had any problems in icy conditions.

My current standard road tyres (not new but not worn out) let me down badly this year. My job requires that I get to work whatever the weather - no excuses! So I'm prepared to give up out and out handling for everyday functionality. Thanks for your input - much appreciated.

The evo 12's were good for donuts in Asda's car par while waiting for SWMBO to finish work :D because we live within 2 miles of the store she is required to make the effort to go to work when it snows, but didn't mind at all dropping her off and picking her up 4 hours later when the snow was nice and deep :D

We have the Vredestein tyres on a rear wheel drive car; they were good last October at speed on a mixture of country roads in mid-Wales, and they've been good on compacted snow and ice in December and January. Probably not as good as good winter tyres but good enough to go everywhere our other car with winter tyres has gone. I like that the spare can be fitted to either side.

I'd add a note of caution about the Nokian tyres; they seem to be marketed as all season tyres in North America and Canada but as winter tyres in Europe. Perhaps their suitability for year round use depends on the typical ambient temperatures in summer months? However against that is that some tyre manufacturers are saying that if you want a single set of tyres to use all though the year, and the choice is summer tyres or winter tyres, then choosing winter tyres is the safer option.

Finally you might also consider Hankook Optimo 4S all season tyres. They have a document containing Auto Bild test results [pdf] that also shows some alternatives you may consider.

I'll take a look at the Hankooks's - THANKS

From the test results I've seen all-seasons don't rate at all well during the winter, I'd consider a snow/mud tyre such as the Vredestein SnowTrac 1

I use a similar rated snow/mud tyre year round on the my VW T25 Transporter (vredestein comtrac winter), and have been very impressed with grip & wear.
