Speakers and/or Sub advise please....

Featured Replies

Hello

Last Night whilst Meandering round my local Halfords, I Bought rather tasty JVC Ipod head unit for the old girl.

Up until then she had a Tape Deck as well as the pathetic 13cm front speakers.

What would be the most effective way of upgrading the sound without blowing money that is put aside for bigger and better things?

Do I simply Upgrade the front and stick a small sub in the boot?

Or 6x9s?

I fairly recently chucked a pair of decent 2 way Sony 13cm speakers in the front and a puncy 300w Sony sub with remote control in the boot. Seems to give a nice sound. I'm a trained sound engineer and the sound is good enough to keep me happy. Wasn't much fun to fit to be honest, the sub that is.

I'm just about to do the same, rip out the original blaupunkt tapedeck and put my trusty sony minidisc unit in.

I've only had the car a week (my first skoda) and haven't had a look at the front speakers, are they standard 13cm units?

The rear parcel shelf has two holes ready to take speakers (10cm holes) Is it worth just sticking to them or go the 6x9 route?

I don't really want to start messing around with a sub and all the extra wiring, as i'm no boy-racer and need the boot space.

My £230 'road-warrior' :p

arrggghh a noise boy.... i'm a lampy

i don't like the sound from 13cm speakers, they often can't make nice low-mid frequencies too well, i guess the best option to maximize the sound is to run them through a high pass filter then let the sub-bass speaker tackle the hard work.. the thing you will struggle with is that absolutely everything rattles in the back of a felicia.. even the number plate!

i had ideas about fibreglassing my door cards to accept a 17cm mid range driver and using a seperate 1" dome tweeter but i', not sure if it's worth it

one of the problems I had is the majority of fellys aren't wired up for rear speakers, (the wiring I there at the CD player end but terminates at the kick panels in the front footwells. I'd go for 6x9's that was my original plan till picked up a sub and wiring kit for £15 on the bay.

You're a lampy?! Should have guessed with and the bodges........ l mean ingenious solutions! :p . I've wondered about the fireglassing solution, it would be nice to split the sound up a bit. I've seen 1 or 2 complete Felicia interior refits and the doors do suit some nice big speakers!

i can't figure out a good way of doing it because the door cards are formed as one piece..

Thanks for all your replys!

I have just finished installing the FLI 12'' ACTIVE SUB which I bought earlier today for a very reasanable £99.99 including wiring!

So I'm just gonna finish these 2 sausage sandwiches Mrs Wolfy has just put in front of me :p then I'm off for a drive!

The other problem as I see it is the doors/door cards are actually pritty shallow, I've previously had Volvo's and you could fit almost anything in the doors because of their sheer depth. I struggled to even fit aftermarket central locking motors in the doors on the felly.

Out of interest how did you run the power cables? I had a right job getting through the firewall!

Hi

I ran the Power Cable through the OSF cable run/grommet/rubber thing. Which I then ran down the right hand side of the car and all the others down the left hand side.

Also I did not want to start chopping wires out the back of the Head Unit for the remote cable so I simply wrapped it round the Ignition Fuse. Simples

does it have a remote switch on wire?

Thanks for replying tom!

Its just a single slim wire no switches an it, i have wrapped it around a fuse. the sub is definitely powered and switched on because the green light is on, wher as before when i forgot to wire the switch, no light showed.

i suspect it is a faulty sub :'(

My first thought was remote wire but if its getting power (green light that's obviously not the problem.) My suggestion would be to check the audio output from the head unit. Are you using line level (rear speaker connections) or RCA phono? If you using speaker connections hook one of your working front speakers up to it and check or if you using phono pre amp outputs try something like an iPod dock or computer speaker. If your not getting any sound via the above I'd check your head unit settings. I know on my head unit the pre amp outputs have to be enabled with the ignition off . Others I've used in the past by default don't send audio to the rear speakers.

PS I'd always suggest connecting the sub remote wire to the remote connection on the head unit as it helps prevent unnecessary battery drain with the amp powering on when the stereo isn't in use. Save a few jump starts!

Im using RCAs Unfortuantly I have nothing to test on

I am going to pop out to the car and try with the ignition off..... BRB

It should be simple to check the sub itself is working even without an audio source - I often check amplifiers this way when troubleshooting ;)

Just plug an RCA-RCA (or RCA-jack lead from anything handy e.g. computer speakers) into the line-level input, crank the volume up a bit and rub the plug(s) on the other end of the lead with your fingers - you should hear a bit of crackling noise that corresponds with the movement. If however you can't hear anything at all even with the volume way up then a faulty sub is indeed likely.

Well done mate!

The ignition needed to be off to set it all.

I'll buy you a pint if there is ever a meet or something?
