Diesel Lifespan ?

Featured Replies

There's a good chance I'll be starting a new job in the near future, which will have a 120 mile commute (60 each way) each day.

I'm think of swapping my current Honda Civic for an Octavia II 1.9 TDi, getting one for around £4k with 70 to 80k on the clock. At that point the cambelt etc should have been replaced so for the short term at least I've avoided one major cost.

I'll be clocking up around 30k miles a year, and the Octavia would need to last me four years, so ending up with around 200k on the clock. Is that achievable ?.

I'd be expecting the turbo + clutch + dampers to expire, and for her to look a little worn body work wise after all that, so general wear and tear after that sort of mileage.

The 1.9TDis have been known to clock up 500_000 miles or so with proper servicing. Just how many of them have seen taxiing?

Cambelt should have been done at 60 or 80k depending which year you are buying (post 2004 interval is 80k)

I would have thought if treated right the clutch and turbo will last 200k - depends if it is mainly motorway miles or not. My mate has the 130pd in his polo and is currently on 105k doing 140mile a day. He has had it since day one and all it has needed is tyres, wheel bearings and various bushes (apart from the £5k of bodywork it needed at 18months when i van smashed into him!). It is on longlife servicing and gets 18-20k between needing a service. A cambelt isn't too much money anyway <£300. But as i say it should have been done tbh.
