Chipping - Octavia 110 Tdi

Featured Replies

I have had my Octavia Est 110 since 2002 and am interested in chipping it. It has done just under 80K. Has anybody got experience of chipping this model and what are the pros and cons - if any - in doing so. Which system would you recommend.

I considered the same in the past but never did it. The impression I got was to try and find a PD130 Octavia equivilent to yours. It makes sense so you don't have the hassle with insurance or the worry of over stressing anything on an old engine. That said, the old TDi engines do seem to be very strong and at 80k, I'm sure that yours has plenty of life left in it even with a remap. The thing to watch out for most people say is the clutch as they are prone to start slipping in the weeks after a remap due to the sudden torque increase.

Shark seem to get the most votes from those who've done the remap....

Plus, and I'm no expert, but there's an order to things that ought to be done first. Those more experienced members will clarify, but I'd do the clutch (replace with an uprated one, not "normal") and cambelt, before looking at brakes. If you're increasing performance you ought to look at fitting the bigger brakes from the VRS.

Then make sure that your bushes, shocks and springs are in good order. Once you've done that lot, you can do the remap with (relative) confidence.

Having said all that, I might be talking bollards. If I am, someone will correct me....... :giggle:

I would have though the brakes would be ok, as I think the 130 has the same set up as the 110 (not like the drums on the 90). Cambelt, I can't really see a need for changing that, just do it as a service item (ie., 60k/4 years). Clutch - maybe, but chipping the 110 is going to only add about 20-25bhp (iirc), so unless your really abusing the car, then the clutch should be ok - unless you are doing 0-100 with a fully loaded caravan on the back :giggle:

No harm in checking out the bushes and shocks though, my shocks were knackered by 80k, but now on 177k with the original bushes. Going to change my rear bushes before I change my tyres though.

My 2p's worth;

If by 'chipping' you mean a tuning box - I wouldn't bother. Get a remap done instead, they're miles better (the guys at Jabba have had quite a bit of experience with the 110tdis so it's worth giving them a call). The clutch should cope with a basic remap as long as it isn't ragged constantly. I would strongly suggest sorting out the suspension, though - it is very soggy as standard and with the extra power it'll make an already wallowy car lurch even more!

If you do want bigger brakes you need to change the hubs as the carriers are part of the hub.

The PD130 has different type and bigger brakes to the 110.

P-Torque in Wolverhampton quoted a nice price to me recently - no connection etc.

Really? I'm fairly sure I've got the same discs etc? 280 or so I seem to recall?

280mm on the 110

288mm on the 130 with different calipers and mountings.

Oh, ok that's cleared that up!

Also means that the 130 is easier to upgrade to 312mm discs

I shall make a mental note, so I don't go saying the wrong things in the future

What's 8mm between friends?

When you put it like that..... :giggle:

P-torque did a very decent remap for my 110.
