Fuel System Cleaner Or Not

Featured Replies

My last 3 new cars the main dealer always added a fuel system cleaner at major services (charged about £9) inspite of

the handbook (If I remember correctly) advising the contary. Maybe just a nice little earner??

Whats your opinion??...Again the Yeti manual advises against.

On my 6 yr old car I certainly achieved low emissions readings come MOT time...but not sure

whether it was do to the fuel cleaner being added...a cheap option to guard againt MOT failure

I thought.

If added are there any warranty implications i.e doing what is not advised?

I'm not sure what my local Skoda dealers policy is on adding cleaner.

Personally, can't see the point, but then I refuse to buy supermarket fuels, so I always get an injector cleaner included anyway.

The main point of the fuel system cleaner is the £9 to the dealer.

Most fuel and oil additives are of doubious benefit.

Rip off

" If it aint broke don't fix it" However if it is....I cured an old Merc 190E 2.6 ,that stalled a lot when idling ,by using 1 dose of STP fuel injector cleaner.I also freed off the hydraulic valve lifters on an old Honda V6 2.5 engine ,that sounded like a bag of spanners, with a tin of oil system flush. The whole point in a nice new Skoda engine is...........(see "Agerbundsen" above) :D

Total rip off.

They sell these cans to the dealers for a maximum of a couple of quids each and even at that price they are a total waste of money.

Agreed.

Trevor, wasn't you that wanted to swap the boot liner, etc with me was it? Most of my PM's disappeared and I knew it was someone over by you I talked to about it, and we are coming over that way next month.

It's a double edged sword

more profit for the garage obviously and a definate benefit to the customer because of the reduction in deposits both in the fuel system and the motor

when you use them every service it's easy to think that they do nothing because they are keeping the motor at a reasonably constant level of health but if you use them on a car that has never had them before then you will feel the difference.

We use them at our garage and of the cars we service we have never had any sludge problems and we have never changed an injector in 30 years.

My advice would be to use one as most VAG dealers do

In the US where the additive market is very big additives are approved by VW

BG make the best ones
