Hi and welcome to the group. :)

The speedo is attached to the gearbox at the back of the enginebay. It should be held on with a large knurled nut. If you undo this, there should be a small black piece of plastic inside the gearbox. (It has a square centre). If it's there, then screw everything back together. The other end of the cable requires the dash surround and instrument cluster being taken out and making sure the cable is connected to the back of the speedo. (about an hour if you've never done it before, and it easiest done with the gearbox end undone as well, as there's almost no room in the dashboard.)

It should be noted that it is illegal to use the car on the road with a non-functioning speedo.

The clutch pedal is adjusted with the nut at the gearbox end of the cable - grab hold of the cable behind the lever and back off the nut with a 10mm spanner/deep socket until the pedal as about level with the brake. Check also that the pedal assist spring is in place (the pedal will sit a centimetre or two higher than it should if the spring's missing)

Leaks, yes. Windscreen seals, door seals, sunroofs, holes in the bulkhead... welcome to Felicia ownership ;)

Thanks for that, the assist spring is in place but seems a little weak, the pedal is about 3 inches above the brake pedal, how far can i back off the nut on the gearbox end?,and the water in the footwell seems to be dripping down from above the clutch/brake pedal i take it this is from the bulkhead.

are you sure its water in the drivers footwell? (is this a right hand drive car?)

most reported leaks in the drivers area are usually one of the following:

1) headlight level adjuster leaking its fluid. it probably doesnt work anyway, they usually dont

2) gearbox oil being forced up through speedo cable (due to blocked breather on gbox)and then ultimately dripping down getting veerythign really gross

3) dreaded bulkhead, but that usually affects more the passanger side

as for your speedo, if whoever changed the clutch didnt disconnect the cable from the box the little gear is probably somewhere inside your gearbox now slowly being ground up :) dont worry too much its only plastic, but if its not visible on the end of the cable i would do a gearbox oil change just to be sure

I think my assist spring seems a little weak too, and it's brand new, so I wouldn't worry much about that. There should be at least a couple of inches of thread on the end of the cable - easily more than is needed. It sounds like they've just screwed the nut on as far as it will go, rather than checking for the proper adjustment.

As well as the points mentioned, I would check (from the engine compartment) that the grommets where the clutch, throttle and speedo cables go through the bulkhead are OK and properly fitted - it's possible one of these got disturbed and is allowing water in.

Actually, with the later type speedo cable that's more likely to happen if they did undo the cable, since unlike the earlier one the drive gear is separate, and quite often stays in place when you pull the cable out. It's also very easy to put back in wrong so it will at best not engage and at worst fall into the diff and get munched.

if i cant get the speedo to work i'll just use my sat-nav as it tells me what speed im doing, then when the weathers better i'll have a go at replacing it!!

When you look at the end of the cable, there should be a square core in there (to go into the square connectors on the gearbox and speedo). If the cable wasn't re-attached to the box, (or even left hanging in the workshop) the core could have made a bid for freedom, in which case either a new core from the scrappy, or a new cable. As the core just slides in and requires less faffing around, I'd go for that option. ;-)

Thanks i'll try that first.

speedo fixed!!!!!!,the inner cable had been pulled out of the speedo when the gearbox had been taken out without the cable being disconnected, just took out the 6 screws on the dash and removed it so i could get my hand in behind the dash and hey-presto it's working, cars getting a full service and then its on the road, hopefully it'll dry out with the heater on then i'll try'n find the water ingress!!!!
