Heating/Aircon system has mind of its own!

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm hoping someone can tell me the following is a common problem and how to fix it, I suspect it's a sensor somewhere going out of whack...

So, the heater in the car will sometimes work OK, but mostly will either blow out red hot air all the time or freezing cold air, depending on what mood it's in, wherever the temperature knob is set has no effect on this behavior and neither does having the aircon button on or off. I've noticed that stopping the car and restarting sometimes puts it back to normal...

Please help, I'm fed up of bieng frozen or cooked all the time!

Best regards

Paul

My car does something similar, hopefully someone can answer for us!

My car when set to say middle temp (20c) or even at full COLD, it will out of nowhere blow god damn HOT air for about 20-40seconds, return back to how it was... IT will do this with Aircon ON or OFF.

When we plugged in Vagcom, we logged into the heater dial control, and noticed that turning the temperature dial didn't always send a corresponding signal, which also leads me to believe that the temperature dial isn't working as it should too. I guess the only thing for sure is to replace the Dial/panel?

Mine did this - it was fixed simply by cleaning a sensor.

By the A/C button (or whichever one is near the driver, can't remember) there is a grille. Behind this, is a sensor for the temperature of the cabin. As this gets clogged up with dust, it can only tell extremes of temperatures and as such is either hot, or cold - no variation.

If found prising the panel off and cleaning the sensor fixed it for me. You might be able to hoover without removing the grille though.

If it's not that - could be the heater control flaps are stuck.

Thanks for that, will clean the sensor as suggested as a first action and see what happens.

Cheers for that tip,

I just ripped off the cover, and there was a tiny fur ball in there, cleaned everything out with a can of compressed air.

I don't think the fuzz ball was big enough to do much tbh, I think the problems are elsewhere, but let's see what happens

As said a few posts up it sounds like the heater flap motor is broken

in my case the temperature randomly blows out HOT air for a short while, before going back to cold.

Is that the motor flap??

on another note, I've noticed that the temperature is difficult to moderate, ie it's either very hot, or very cold. not a lot in between.

NOW we hooked up vagcom to it, and logged into the temp dial. Turning the dial sometimes didn't show up on vagcom, which meant that the dial's not working properly. Anyone heard of that before?
