My pride'n'joy; built week 51, less than two weeks with me and less than 1K on the clock.

Was having a snoop about the engine compartment and to my utter disbelief saw this...

Now, I'm no grease monkey, but there is no way given the pitting and corrosion, on what I'm assuming is the exhaust manifold, that this is a new part.

Sat outside at the docks for a few weeks?

Assuming the car is in regular use it'll soon get covered in dirt so that you'll not notice it!

Not at all surprised really if that is the exhaust manifold, it will only be a rough casting, hence the pitting and any paint will soon get burned off by the temperature it reaches and surface rust will take hold. I suspect it is the exhaust manifold as it looks like the turbo lurking on the far left of the picture. Unless it starts blowing then I wouldn't worry about it.

Nothing wrong with that. The manifolds are made in vast quantities from cast iron IIRC this is done to save money.

If it bothers you get a stainless steel item

With all due respect, you obviously don't spend much time working on cars. That is pretty much what I would expect to see on the manifold. Give it another month or two and you'll have a good uniform crust of rust on it :)

Last time I messed under the bonnet was on an Escort I owned about 15 years ago, so trust me I've seen some sights on 2nd/3rd/4th hand motors I played with back in the 80s/90s; before things got 'technical' and electronic wizzardry became the norm.

However, what I didn't expect to see was that much corrosion in such a short space of time on a 'new' car.

The consensus here appears to be that there's nowt to concern myself with, therefore I'll thank you all for your input and retire; secure in the knowledge that all is as it should be. (And before I get flamed by anyone else :S )

The corrosion on the bare metal of the exhaust manifold is no worse than what you see on the bare metal of brake discs if they sit around for a while. When you wash your car, the friction surface of the discs can rust over in mere hours.

The silver 'thing' in the foreground looks like the DPF and top left of the first pic is a green label with 'Garrett' on it which would logically be the VNT actuator so there is no doubt it is indeed the cast exhaust manifold.

Relax, it is completely normal despite being a new car emoticon-0148-yes.gif
