Hard to get into 1st and reverse

Featured Replies

Hi folks i'm new on here and wondered if anyone could help me out. I've got an 05 plate octavia 2.0tdi Elegance and i'm having problems when selecting 1st gear or reverse when stationary. I can move over and select a higher gear then back to 1st or reverse and it will go in, also gear still seams to be engaged when clutch is fully down. The car is still in warenty from a Renault dealership that i bought it from and they have said they will sort it but cannot find the cause of the problem after changing the clutch, slave cylinder and master cylinder. The car has only done 70000 miles. Any help would be great cheers.

Sounds like the cluch its self, was it inspected when they replased the slave cylinder ,the box would have to come out to replace it .

They changed the clutch and the slave cylinder first off...

This is almost certainly 'clutch drag' and the garage have done all the right things. Could be that the centre plate is tight on the splines or a failure to properly bleed the hydraulic system.

Gearbox oil been changed?

Wasn't there an issue with some boxes where the syncro for 1st was failing?

I seem to remember this.

You might be right. Can't recall enough detail and certainly not enough info to possibly find a thread about it...

Synchro failure on 1st is rare on any car because the syncho has any easy life.

I think the telltale sentance is, "also gear still seams to be engaged when clutch is fully down."

Definitely sounds like clutch drag - could be the operating mechanism or could be the centre plate sticking on the splines. If the latter it is usually worse when the transmission in cold and goes away at normal operating temperature. Metal swarf (from a failing DMF) can also cause the centre plate to go sticky on the input shaft...
