performance glow plugs

Featured Replies

hey guys :)

hows things? feel like changing my glow plugs in the near future so have just been looking at what makes etc. what and who would produce the best glow plugs available? NGK?

thanks,

jordan

Wow I didn't know such things existed?!

I admit I'm a noob when it comes to Diesel engines, but don't Glow plugs merely work at starting the engine or when it's icy cold outside?

yes exactly right, the glow plugs are only switched on when cranking the engine to get the combustion chambers warm, once the engine is running they are off so they have no effect on the performance of the engine whatsoever

How can you get a performance heating element? 0-60C in 20ms :)

I had to replace the bosch ones in mine after a failure on cylinder 1 in the cold weather on a 4 year old car - engine warning light on and everything. Replaced them with NGK. Fleabay 30 quid a set compared to 18.50 each at the main dealer.

Personally think you are wasting your time unless you have cold starting or lumpy running issues.

If you do replace them you will need a 10mm deep socket and a torque wrench - 15-20Nm torque on the plug when you nip them up which is quite low.

people! i know i am not looking for more power from a glow plug ffs. stop jumping to comclusion. by performance glow plugs, if you do a google search and have a look, are usually ones which heat up faster (for starting not going faster), heat to higher temps, have dual coils (not sure what they do), and dont swell if you need to heat them a few times in cold weather. thats what i meant. i was just wondering, as per first post, if there are any plugs that are known for being better quality than the rest of should i stick to oem parts

I think you didn't understand the joke, it was about the speed of glow plug getting to 60 degrees centigrade. :)

It is the laws of physics, the lower the resistance of the plug the more energy is applied to the plug and the faster it heats up.

Bosch plugs did fail on my car before 4 years and the NGK ones do work better (but that is compared to failed or failing Bosch one).

I would recommend if it ain't broke don't fix it.... and the car should detect if the plugs have failed.

Standard OEM glow plugs will do the job just fine

Technically not true, the glow plugs come on to start the car then go off. Then they come back on again whilst the engine is running when cold to aid combustion and lessen diesel knock.

yes ok, i did over simplify it but as at the end of the day a heater element in a glow plug just heats up!! it does nothing more so all this talk of 'performance' plugs that heat up quicker is just coblers, they will only be on when the engine is stone cold anyway... if people are that deperate to get thier engine started, just switch on the ignition let the plugs do thier thing, switch off then on again and let them do a second heating cycle

I know mate, wasn't trying to come over all smart arse ;)

again! as per post! at no point did i say i want more power from a glow plug. ps my car starts on the button, but i figured that after 76000 and no record of them being changed i might do just that. and wanted to replace them with the best possible plugs that i could! if you read my second plug you will see that i mentioned heating the plugs several times like that can cause them to swell, top quality glow plugs dont do this. by me saying performance i simply meant what is best, what heats up more and faster and doesnt swell and has dual core. dont take the **** about something completely irrelavant please!

ooh get you! just use ngk ones bruv, or dare i say it genuine ones are roughly the same price.. although as had already been said, there's no real need to change them unless they are giving you problems tbh, afaik there's no scheduled replacement inteval on them

I thought they only fitted those to the 2 ltr Petrol Fabia, because they allowed overboost on the NA engine, I believe they where NGKings.
