park assist or not?

Featured Replies

Hi guys just about to order a superb estate, looking at the option list we can't decide on the park assist or not, going for the 1.8 tsi 4x4 elegance in Amethyst purple with luna wheels, KESSY, sunset glass dimming rear view mirror, hill hold and heated front screen. putting in a octavia scout petrol. If you guys got and ideas about the park assist or any of you use it some feedback would be good.....................Cheers Stu

I did not bother on my recent order.

Front and rear sensors are a great help as Superb is a big car but I worry that park assist is just a novelty item, that would be used to show off to friends but no use in the real world, plus it can put your lovely alloys into the kerb if you park behind a skinny car. Good value price wise though.

I specified Park Assist when I ordered my Elegance 170CR DSG, which I've had now for >two years. When I first used it, I winced at how close it appeared to steer to the vehicle in front, but I'm totally used to that now. When my car has reversed to an acceptable distance from the vehicle behind, I put it into "D" and it straightens up very well.

Plus points:

  • It will get the car into tighter spots than you might be prepared to try manually.
  • It's a really amusing event to watch passengers or passers-by who've not seen it work before.
  • It's handy when you're getting tired.

Negative points:

  • It uses the cars in front and behind to line up with, so if one or both of them are very close to or on the kerb, so will you be.
  • The wheels can be kerbed if you don't realise and allow for this.

I wanted front sensors anyway, so PA was a no-brainer extra few pounds. I've certainly never regretted it, because I was aware of the above before I got to use it.

HTH :)

Kerb your wheels! Was unaware of this. Having second thoughts now.

I might sound thick how would you 'allow' for kerbing if the car steers itself?

+1

But what I would add is the time it put my (fortunately just the winter) tyres into the curb, both the vehicle in front and behind were a good 6 - 10" away from the curb :S

I meant to allow the fact that it does this - so don't try to park between two vehicles that are either too close to the kerb, or narrower than your car.

ok thanks going on your info park assist not worth bothering with.

As it's only £200 over the top of front parking sensors, i think it'll be a good selling point when the time comes to part company....

ps. I have it, it's not used much, but it has NEVER kerbed a wheel...

I in South Wales, Ebbw Vale. Anybody local got park assist want to demo system very confused. I will be off after 10 tonigt not be back on untill Friday night please excuse any delay in response..........Stu

Well having seen this thread, and previous complaints on sensors malfunctioning front and back bumpers on all models..and maybe not forgetting one could fail on the park assist side of things as well, and having use 2 sensors placed on the wheel arch front and back..i do wonder what would happen if a sensor did fail? Most deffinitely the car would not be able to park correctly, secondly the cost of sensors arent exactly cheap plus of course damage to the alloy wheels...and they aren't cheap either.

I'd be inclined to have a look for another optional extra that might compliment your superb and line the top of the kerb with the middle of the bonnet as you park..that way you will be a good 6inches away from the kerb

I've never kerbed a wheel either, but the point I was trying to make was that the system isn't equipped to prevent kerbing - only the driver can do that by their choice of parking space.

I'd still have it for the added selling point, but like all accessories, it's a totally personal choice.

Agreed Ray

On another Note - Be Careful with "Luna" wheels - there's a few buckles on the Forum.

Test your heated screen straight away - i've had a replacement as only half worked

I like my Sunset Glass

My Old folk's Transit Van has a version of Hill Hold on it - it's currently disabled! - he HATES it as it wont allow the car to roll back in a forward gear (yes, i know that's what it's meant to do) but when doing small maneuvers, sometimes it's easier, and quicker, just to let the car roll...

Love my Park assist, but it's mostly a toy!

It's never kerbed my wheels, I've done that all on my own.

It's great for "Show Off" value, and makes a great feature when you want to sell the car.

It's usefull if you're parallel parking in traffic. the computer doesn't get hassled by the other drivers and the result is you get into the space on the first try, instead of embarrassingly having to come back out and try again.

On the down site it has it's limitations. you must pass the parking space parallell to it, so you cant come at it from an angle, straighten up and expect the park assist to do the rest. (e.g. when parking on the opposite side of a wide road, or on a bend)

Forget park assist and forget Lunas.

Use the money on the sound upgrade.

That's the options I took.

Also the electric tailgate is brilliant.

IMO ..... Phil

What size space can the park assist squeeze into? How much room extra front and back does it need?

I remember seeing a demo of parkassist a few years ago (not on the superb), and it needed 1 meter either side.

cheers guys think i will forget park assist will check out the wheels and screen. our octavia scout and my works transit have hill hold I love it use it all the time sometimes drive my parents rav4 that got it also.perhaps have heated rear seats instead chear my son up 16 your olds are so fussy.......lol

I love the SUNSET glass. You will not regret that option.

If you have kids, also consider the curtains for the rear doors.

And the electric tailgate, its so nice.

We had rear parking sensors on our Fabia Combi Greenline and I had grown rather fond of them. However, on our newly bought Superb Twin door there are no parking sensors at all. It took some time getting used to but I just drove out one evening and did some practice parking runs.

We have the Sunset windows as well and I love them.

Done it. Ordered 1.8 tsi 4x4 in purple with sunset glass, kessy, heated screen, heated washers, luna's, hill hold and auto dimming mirror. Strange that the mirror and hill hold was standard when we go the octavia scout. Never mind waiting for a delivery date now.

I know I can get into a smaller space manually, but only with a lot of effort. The system does need a space at least 4" bigger than the car, but I don't think it needs 6" or more. I've definitely got it to park me in spaces smaller than that.

I know the Superb is good, but can it really park with four inches to spare- I wouldnt like to try that even with the moon buggy James May drove on Top Gear last night in "crab" mode :giggle:

The Yeti is 4200mm long and the Park Assist needs a space of minimum 4700mm to park it in. So it only needs 250mm each end - which makes it just under 10" required either end.

So do I use my Park Assist? Living in London I sure do nearly every day. It is a great feature. But if you don't want it the front sensors are invaluable. And as people said above once you've ticked that box the added money for the PA is really not that much in the grand scheme of things.
