Steering wheel shake

Featured Replies

When on the motorway i get steering wheel shake, however this is not just all the time depends on road surface and speed, for example if i go a 60-70mph i will get wheel shake however if i go at say 80mph its fine. The wheels have been balanced and all the wheel bolts are tight.

Any ideas?

You may have a buckled rim, or worn suspension bushes, or a number of other things. I had bad wheel shake at around 70 in my old Fiesta 1.4..Had the wheels balanced, and then took it to a different place to have em re-done just incase, and it turned out although it didnt look shonky, one front wheel was slightly out of true

Mine had a constant shake that came in somewhere above 50mph and just got worse with speed - disappeared completely after having new front tyres fitted. If it's not that severe, I'd check the driveshaft balancer weight - the rubber bushes can wear out and make it come loose.

It may also be worth swapping the front and rear wheels over to see if that makes any difference.

I had a very similar problem, so i replaced the drive shaft balancer weight which was loose. However although that helped it did fix the shake. turned out the top strut bush needed replacing on the front. Instantly fixed!

Similar problem on a wheel from a donor Felly, turned out to be a bulge in the tread of the tyre. Apparently the 'Dunlop bulge' is quite common in a certain make of tyre. :giggle: That rim and tyre is now on the off-road truck (Lazarus), makes no difference there ;)

I once had this on the Favorit (same manual steering rack as Felicia) but it was to such an extent that it came on like mad for a short period quite at random (but not very often). Mot advisory suggested the rack and track rod ends were worn, so replaced it and it never happened again.

I'd suspect an out of true tyre or rim, and if not that, rod ends.

I put a new wheel on the Fiesta, and it cured the wobble on that..

Which gives me an idea; if your spare has a decent tread on it, put it on in place of each other wheel in turn, starting with the fronts, and if your shake goes, you need a new wheel or tyre for the corner the spare's presently on.
