Should I buy this Superb?

I've been pricing up insurance for my lightly modified Octavia Elegance and prices seem to have doubled since last year. No idea why, but I'm finding it really hard to justify paying the new rates.

The Superb listed above, however, comes in about £300 a year cheaper, and with a new baby due in April, the extra room wouldn't go amiss.

Would I be mad swapping a much-loved and reliable petrol Octavia for an unknown diesel Superb? :S

The 1.9PD 5 speed manual is the best Superb. Check that the rear seats fold - they should for this model year.

Velour upholstery is a disaster with young kids - it stains very easily and gets quickly worn and then ripped. The base level hard cloth or leather is better.

Check that correct oil has been used, cambelt changed and that plenum drain/pollen filter seal mods have been done.

Haggle very hard and be prepared to walk away - or better still, leave an offer on the table then walk. Times are hard, so use this to your advantage.

All very sound and sensible advice. I thank you :)

As for the velour, I could get covers, couldn't I??? I must investigate B)

The folding rear seats were introduced in May 2004, so this should definitely have them - however the seat bases do not lift up so the seats do not fold flat (far from it) so it's use is very limited IMO.

I actually found the upholstery very well tempered in my comfort Superb.

Everything else roto mentions is however spot on, especially the price, MKI Superb's are pretty hard to sell on again.

While the Superb may be bigger inside, the boot will surely be small, due to the fact its a saloon, rather than a hatchback.

With a kid on the way, you'll be amazed at all the bootspace prams and stuff can take up.

no real advice on the car, but when our girls were small, all i did was get a large cheap beach towel from a market in what ever shade the seats are and lay it over the top of the seat, a lot cheaper than seat covers and can be removed and washed when needed.

Cheers everyone for the replies

I'm really leaning towards this now. The tax is £100 cheaper, the insurance is over £300 cheaper but are there any other problems I should be looking out for on a 60,000 mile diesel? I've never owned a diesel before.

Also, what do you reckon I'd get for my Octy (see signature) with 75k?

Thanks :)

Just another question. Is £4795 a good price? I can't find a similar model/year/mileage to compare :S

From Glass's

Skoda Superb Comfort

1.9TD Diesel 4-door Saloon

5 Speed Manual Front Wheel Drive

Year: 2005 54

Mileage: 60,000

Part-exchange Price:

Excellent condition:

£4070

Average condition:

£3630

Below average condition:

£3140

So doesn't seem a bad price, you could always make a cheeky offer,

Find out when the cambelt was done also.

Sorry, only just seen this as I posted in the Superb 1 section as well.

Thanks for the tip
