anyone ever changed a tailgate? (hatch)

Featured Replies

Looking at a vrs tailgate on ebay. Thinking this might be easier than buying a spoiler and then drilling my tailgate. Anyone ever changed one? I guessing its a 2 man job; is it a complete pita?

its actually very easy but you will need an extra pair of hands

unclip headlining cover and under neath the head lining are 2 x torque bolts t40 i think thats it lol just slides off

you will need to disconect the wiring wich is behing the passenger side rear wheel well carpet

30 min job to swap

dont forget to swap the lock over again 5 min job

I was worried about the wiring....I am assuming from previous cars that the wiring runs through a narrow rubber conduit between the tailgate and the main body. Wouldn't this be tricky to remove and refit? Especially if the end of the loom is behind the passenger side rear wheel? :S

Id just fit the spoiler to your existing tailgate, its only drilling 4 holes(im guessing)ive never fitted one to a skoda but have fitted loads to honda's when i worked for them, they even had the marks on the tailgate where you needed to drill the holes.

Yeah, just a bit nervous about drilling into bodywork! :o

I'll have a look to see if there's any markers for holes there.....

No, there aren't any marks showing where ti drill.

just swap the tailgate

you disconnect the wiring behing the carpet in the boot takes all of 30 secs then unclip it to the top of the roof and it just pulls through as you remove the boot lid very simple

Yeah, sounds like the easiest option.....

Tie some string to the end of wires so when you pull it out you can pull new one in using the string.. As for drilling you can use my car for measurements of the holes m8

 No probs when you thinking of doing it?? need some advance warning

So much easier fitting the spoiler to your existing tailgate but you have to do what your happy with, just make sure you dont scratch your bodywork lifting the tailgate off & on make sure you get it aligned correctly.Iknow clive is good when it comes to working on a vrs & does know his stuff when it comes to them, however if you have never swoped a tailgate over before it will take you more than 30 mins,i hope the heated rear window works & the wiper motor to on the replacement or your just making more work for yourself.

All good points you've made there. Now I'm really torn about what to do......

When you remove the spoiler off the other tailgate you can easily make up a cardboard template of the position of the holes to help you drill them on yours if your not confident of where the holes should be.
