i introduced myself already on the other page, so greeting from a hopefully soon to be octavia owner ! i am just getting a few pointers from yourselves regarding buying an octavia , im torn between a 1.9 se tdi or a 1.6 diesel model,after buying a seemingly quality brand and being burned by hidden problems the manufacterer had with their cars i dont want to swap and get it all over again! my concerns are with the dp filter that is fitted to the 1.6 , goes it give grief? or am i going to be better getting a 1.9 as i dont think they had the dp filter did they??im also wondering if the economy is better on the 1.6 compared to the 1.9 , my use of the car will be shortish trips weekdays but longer runs at the weekends and holidays , im going down the deisel path because each time i have seen people gat a petrol car it ends up using quite a lot more fuel, so in summary 1.9 or 1.6 and what to expect ! once again this a genuine prospective buyer but would appreciate help from you guys as its always better to get a genuine dose of real owner feed back cheers and ta!!

Its mainly the older 2.0ltr PD diesel engine with DPF filter that has the problems as theyre dirtier, the common rails r pretty much fine, my folks have the superb 2.0 170 common rail with dpf and like you it drives small journeys round town through the week and the odd longer drive and its fine (touch wood) where as my Octavia VRs 170 PD regenerates all the time and its doin 40 mile a day, The DPF is a thorn in EVERY manufactures side though im afraid, but dont let it put you off, even though my PD regens all the time it doesnt bother me and hasnt been a fault (touch wood again) but if youre going for an engine with DPF fitted, stick with common rail diesels and you should be fine! :thumbup:

I would go with the newer and more efficient 1.6CR. As has been mentioned already, ALL recent diesel engines are now fitted with a DPF. The newer revisions do not seem to be causing issues.

Im a born hater of DPF's having had issues in the past but I am getting the feeling that the newer CR ones may be better but time will tell. Its unfortunate that most manufacturers are starting to fit them to beat the eurocrats tighter emission laws.

I would suggest a drive in both to see how they feel, some say the cars with DPF's lack a bit of the grunt diesels used to have. Also check MPG figures as again different technology on different engines can make a big difference, the older Mk 1 Octavias with the rattley old 1.9 engine achieved incredible mpg figures & seemed to run forever but compliance with stricter & stricter emission laws has stifled some of the economy of newer cars

tthanks for the speedy replies guys keep em coming! its difficult to get any info before you make the leap of faith isnt it!as earlier said i was going to go for the 1.9 pd se but am wondering if the 1.6 is going to be lower on road tax ??also the newer car seems to have a few more standard accessories than the 1.9 really appreciate the help!

I've been running a 2.0 PD 170 with DPF for the past four years covering 45k miles and have never seen any DPF lights come on. Same with the previous car also fitted with DPF. At times it feels slightly more sluggish, but never tells me to regenerate.

That said I know 2.0 isn't under consideration, but it's not all doom and gloom with DPFs.

So how do you regenerate if it tells you to?

I agree, I've had my 2.0 pd 140 56,ooo mls 3.5 years and have only had one fault (light on) about a week after delivery ,I get a warm oily/carbon smell every now and then as it re gens but thats it,

Having driven Octavia 1.9 pd's for 4 years I've now changed to the 1.6cr. I too had some concerns with the DPF, but I do a lot of long runs so I don't envisage any problems with this. You really need to test both cars first to see the differences. The 1.6 delivers similar power to the 1.9, but is quieter and smoother, £30 road fund for the 1.6 & £110 for the 1.9. After the first brim to brim mpg check the cr return 54 for the same journey type the 1.9pd would be around the 48 - 50 mpg.

As good as the 1.9 was I don't think I would go back to it after driving the 1.6

The DPF regeneration takes place without you realising it's happening, the only thing I've noticed is a 'hot burning smell' which I'm told can occur when the regen is taking place. If the light comes on your supposed to give the motor a spirited drive up the road.

Thanks again the road tax difference is a big hitter,also it seems the SPF probe seem less of a problem on the newer model I'm hopefully going inthe next few day to give them a go!! Cheers for your time aain

Ps last reply done on phone so please forgive semi cryptic wording!!

I got the 170 pd rs 08 model haven't had any problems with the dpf since that time so far..Although the light has came on all you need to do is take the car for a blast/cruise on motorway etc,and it will clear.I only really do longer journeys on weekend also,think some of the stories you hear about dpf are mainly because some drivers don't understand what it's about or ignore when the dpf light does come on,and don't take it for a blast to clear it,although reading some of the posts on here about dpf,some drivers have just been unlucky and had problems.But the rule to follow concerning dpf is,if the light does come on take for a run on an expressway/motorway and it should be okay.

I think in the manual it says drive the car in 4th gear keeping above 2000rpm,but you don't really have to do that.

just a motorway journey of 15 mins or so in top gear will clear it.. ;)

My 2.0PD 140 superb with DPF is used 95% on short drives, my daily commute is 1 mile at 30mph and with the car only covering 300 miles this month I have had no DPF issues and never seen it require a regeneration yet. Regeneration occurs when the car thinks the filter is becoming clogged, generally during normal driving it should keep itself in check.

My 2008 2.0PD Octavia Scout has 25,000 miles on it and barely makes it to operating temperature most days.

I try and 'borrow' it from the wife once a every few months to take it on a long motorway run to work and back.

As above never even seen the light or noticed any adverse effects from a DPF regen.

Yes I took both out but much preferred th 1.9 power divert was better , I know the 1,6 has been made to feel like a petrol in it's smooth delivery but the 1.9 felt better plus no SPF that swung it for me!
