How to take the seats out?

Featured Replies

This applies to seats without air-bags - refer to specialist if those are involved...

Front Seats

You'll need a 10mm XZN Spline Bit. These come in two versions, short and long. Owing to the difficulty in getting at the front inboard screw head I'd suggest getting the longer one would be better though you can manage with the small one. Don't try using anything other than the proper tool since I suspect the screw heads aren't very hard - mine are certainly worn from previous removals.

Example here though mine's a Unior ZX10 No192 1/2 which I couldn't find on the Internet - came from Bell Tools of Gloucester at £5.98

Then proceed as follows:

Removal

1. Remove headrest (tilting back backwards if necessary

2. Wind backrest fully forward (makes it easier to abstract the seat)

3. Push seat fully forwards

4. Take out the two rear screws

5. Push seat fully backwards

6. Take out the two front screws

7. Disconnect CD changer wires (if relevant)

8. Lift seat out being careful not to scratch anything with the runners - easier said than done!

If you do front screws before back screws the runners end up poking out of the back of the seat and it's harder to get through the door aperture...

Refitting

1. Put seat back in making sure it's in the right place - you should be able to see all the captive nuts

2. Refit the front screws - tighten fully then back off a turn or two

3. Push seat fully forwards

4. Refit the rear screws joggling the seat until the bolts line up with the nuts (the reason for backing off in 2) - tighten fully

5. Push seat fully backwards

6. Tighten the front screws (easy to forget)

7. Refit headrest and adjust seat to correct position.

Notes

A. I'd also advise checking after a week or so - when I took mine out again today I found the screws not particularly tight - possibly since the seat runners sit on the carpet and this would compress over time.

B. Mine appeared to have thread locking compound on them too.

C. I've read somewhere bolts should be replaced each time the seat is put back in. Mine clearly were exhibiting wear, but I don't know whether they'd be out subsequent to the dockside SE rebuilding exercise in 2007.

Rear Seats

These are much easier than the fronts.

The seat bases are easy - just push the struts out of their sockets. Refitting is the reverse.

The seat backs can also be taken out to increase luggage space.

The smaller one is easier - drop down and you'll see a locating socket at the outer end - using a screwdriver release this end (it'll be obvious how when you see it) then pull up to release and outwards to get the other end out of the spigot mount - be careful or you'll scratch the outer seat trim with the other end... Refitting is the reverse but make sure the outer end relocates fully otherwise it might pop out subsequently.

The larger one is similar but you have to release the centre bolted mounting for the seat belt. You'll ideally need a socket set for this. Otherwise proceed as the smaller one.

good wright up, i am sure this will be helpfull for those who didnt know how
