DSG advice needed

Featured Replies

Just wanted to add a new thread in regards to some comments i just read on the forum regarding the use of the DSG box:

Bit worried now. My vRS will be picked up in next week or so and I certainly don't want to damage it. When I took the extended test drive I was changing from D to S then into Manual and back again whilst on the move. Car didn't react badly in any way and i assumed you could do this. Can you all update what you think. Will this sort of use damage the DSG/car. Surely you don't have to stop to change the function of the DSG???

Won't do anything to your car mate, designed to be changed mid-drive.

Just don't try pushing it into reverse while you are moving at high velocity! emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Thanks.

Would be just my luck to blow the bloody thing up after waiting so long to get it.

Can't wait now . Hopefully only a week or so to go. It was in the port on Fri apparently!

Thanks.

No worries, I bet you can't wait!

+1 , do what you want with it on the move, will be fine

the DSG is practically fail safe, it wont do anything if it is dangerous to the box.

Changing between D, S and manual mode are all on the run features of DSG, like the rest say if it didnt want you to it wouldnt allow you to.

Thanks for that. Has put my mind at ease. Just need the car now to start playing!!!!!!

Just to add...you might want to wait until the car is warm before you use S mode as it will hang onto the gears even on a light throttle. Once you're used to it you can easily just tap the right paddle to change up, but when it's you're new to DSG box's it's easy to forget that you're in sport mode & rev it to 6 or 7K without intending to....and when you're running it in & it's cold this could cause damage.

I was going to add something about this...

I took a mate for a spin, and showing off I put it straight into S and give it a bit of power, while talking to him, the revs go right upto 7k or more! depending on how much foot you are giving it, I got some sort of engine management light on, Im assuming this is cos the engine was cold and didnt like what I was doing. This went away after a restart. Im sure this would be fine if the engine was warm.

~I havnt used the manual mode once, there is no need for this while it has the flappy paddles.

 - I was always told never to thrash a cold engine - let it warm up to normal temp.

Sounds like the EMS was protecting the engine and cut it out or did something to raise the warning light.

Hopefully no harm done.

On the RX8 you have a set of red lights that go off as the engine warms up to stop you over revving it.

Hopefully! It was protecting itself from me! It must be female

Silly question - what's the key difference between DSG gearboxes and traditional automatic gearboxes?

might be wrong, but i think its the DSG has 2 clutches where as the normal automatic has one clutch and a torque converter.

also the DSG is seamless and lightning fast in comparison to a normal automatic

Torque converter? What's that when it's at home?

its what makes a conventional automatic work. thats about the best i can do. driven quite a few autos and DSG isnt like it other than the fact theres no clutch. much slicker

I've been a bit of a "tit" a couple of times.. thinking i was in sport mode..knocked the Dsg down to neutral.. and it has coped quite well !

The DSG also has a light to tell you to back off as your cooking the clutch's. It's explained in the manual somewhere.

lol.. and you've managed to bring it on already! ;) I'm impressed

I just checked this, and yes it does. (I checked the manual, I didn't try cooking my clutch haha)

It is a red temperature symbol with a circle thing around it.

It advises to switch off the engine and wait for the light to go out before carrying on with the journey.

nearly all the octavias use the DSG6 'wet' gear box. Only the 1.8TSI uses the DSG7 'dry' gear box. they behave quite differently in their characteristics

I had a 7 speeder and it still rolled back on a hill just the same as the 6 speeder in my regular car..so that's not changed !
