Clunking?

Featured Replies

While going around some back lanes, driving 'nicely' yesterday I have started to notice a slight clunk on setting off and under hard breaking. It is defiantly coming from the front end of the car. Have checked the shafts and cv boots and they all seem intact. I have heard that the engine mounts on these are made of digestive biscuits and are a very common thing to go wrong. Has anyone had experience of this and what sort of noise did it make???

I suppose i'll be the first to say it - Console bushes ;) The engines mounts would knock on lift off, try braking with the clutch in and seeing if you can make it clunk

It's not the bushes iv had them all replaced with powerflex ones. It does slightly knock on lift off just does it worse when setting off which makes me think it's the engine mount

Lift off and acceleration?

Dog bone to me, whats gear change like? sloppy?

Slightly on lift off. Acceleration, only if you really boot it and

Gear change is fine! It's more on setting off its worse! I had coilovers fitted on Friday but it happened before!

My 2.0i is going in on Thursday for this (or a similar) problem. I also suspect the dogbone. The sound is a cross between a rubbery squeak and a piece of metal sliding around in a wooden box. I can always make it appear by coasting with clutch out, and then suddenly dropping the clutch in. So I think it is definitely something to do with movement of the engine relative to the body. Strangely, I drove about 80 miles on Saturday without any noise, but it came back again yesterday.

Could simply be brake pad slap. Other favorites are dogbone mount, or LH engine mounting needing greased up.

Under braking and pull off, my clunk was the ARB bushes.

Hi,as i've had my Fabia for 10yrs now i've had all the clunking variations and the prime suspects are as follows; Front ARB drop links well known failure as not heavy duty enough, rear bush (console) on lower wishbone, and lastly the ARB saddle bush. If any of the bushes have failed replace with Powerflex as well worth it in long run!! P.S. if this reply appears twice, my fault as laptop/ human interface not working correctly!!!

I also suspect the dogbone. The sound is a cross between a rubbery squeak and a piece of metal sliding around in a wooden box.

The dealer has identified the ARB bushes as the culprit, which makes sense. The noise is loudest on acceleration or deceleration when the complete ARB rotates the same way in both bushes. There is less noise on cornering when the ARB twists and there is less (equal and opposite) rotation in the bushes. Cost: £205.

My clunking was the old drop links one was corroded quick swap to Mondeo ones and the noise is gone
