Nearly new Octavia worries.

Featured Replies

Have purchased a June 010 elegance estate 2.0 tdi pd,done 14000 mls ,when pushing on a dual carriageway yesterday a excessive amount of blue smoke was visible in the rear view mirror did abate after a few miles, I now notice if i accelerate briskly blue smoke is clearly visible in my rear view mirror, the service guy at the stealer's

has booked it in to be looked into, however when at the stealer's i spoke to the after sales manager and he said the blue smoke was normal 0n a pd and the the excessive blue smoke on the dual carriageway was because the car had only been used for short runs recently. I Had a Fabia 1.9 pd and only ever noticed any smoke when stating from cold. Any comments on this before I visit the Stealer's on Monday would be a appreciated as at moment I can't accept that seeing and smelling blue smoke in my rear view mirror is normal Cheers MB

Wouldn't have thought you should see any smoke, especially not blue? I may be wrong, but I think black smoke is usually associated with unburnt fuel, and blue with burning oil? Steam is a different story of course....

That is my thoughts entirely, my worry is that the stealer insists its normal, what would be my next move?

Well known phenomena if you live on the Isle of Wight - I've had several diesels. What happens is they get used for short trips on the IOW, but go over on the Pompey car ferry, blast up the motorway and give her a good clear out. Fair old bit of smoke, soon clears. No worries.

Thanks, shall be doing apx 3OOmls mainly D/C and M/M over the weekend have to see how she goes.

Check your oil level and log any significant consumption. Blue smoke would indeed suggest burning engine oil.

Check your fuel consumption on a full tank to full tank basis.Black/grey smoke is pretty standard for a hard accelerating diesel.

White smoke/vapour is not unusual after a cold start but keep an eye on your coolant level.

If all are OK, then it is just a characteristic.

Does your car have a DPF? if it has then there should be NO smoke from the exhaust. Black smoke is normal but blue smoke is oil...

Black smoke can happen on a PD particularly when accelerating hard. My Octy, which is a close spec to yours does this from time to time. Especially when only just warm.

Blue smoke is something else. That suggests you may be burning oil - which is not normal.

You say it did abate after a few miles, i'd say it was just carbon build up and a bit of oil blow by past the piston rings. I would give it a good run through the gears when it has warmed up and you can do so safely, I do with my car and my previous, just after filling up when the car at it's heaviest, get into 2nd gear and floor the throttle, when it stops accelerating, change up and do it again. That will clear a few cobwebs.

No DPF .I did notice that the oil was slightly high on the dip stick level with the bulbous part of the dipstick rather than below, service guy did not think this was high to be a problem but drained some off just in case, my previous experience with the P D 1.9 tdi on a fabia was great changed the oil at correct time, no blue smoke, no top ups great engine, A bit ****ed off at the moment having to discuss ,this after paying £ 16 000 for a car , the amount of blue smoke bellowing out behind me yesterday has given cause for concern. Ive had several Diesels never had the same experience before. Can I give it back on this monthly / 1000mile return deal as im not a happy customer ?

Can only give it back if they can't rectify the fault but as they are denying it is a fault i would be taking it to another Skoda dealer for a second opinion. Did it not blow off smoke on the test drive?

Not that i was aware, It will have a 300 ml trip this weekend , i,ll be monitoring it carefully, the first guy I saw said it could be a problem and booked it in for Monday, it was the after sales manager who said it was normal without driving it, so Ill know more after the check in the workshop on Monday. The car came from Skoda UK ,registered in June 2010 .I was assured it was thoroughly checked by Skoda UK before delivery to the dealer, out of interest does anyone know what these cars would be used for, as it has done 14000 miles in a quite a short time, and a bit late to ask now, are they are a sensible buy as you don't know what they have been used for its first 14000 miles. I have a good relationship with my Dealer and hopefully soon Ill be " Happy Skoda Driver"

Overfilled with oil is a possibility. If this is the case, it would kick out plenty of blue smoke and will more than likely cause other problems long term-I had a cat go on a petrol car that was (badly) overfilled.

Does the registration start with AE or AB by any chance?

They are ex-rental cars. I bought one in 2007 - at the time the forecourt was full of 14k mile 9-12month old Octavia Elegance diesels with AE06 and AE56 regs. Had my pick of colour - or rather swmbo's pick of colour :giggle:

They are a good buy. Mine was a great car - did another 40k miles in it over 3 yrs with no problems. Just needed half a litre of oil every 8000 miles or so.

Bro-in-law bought one in 2009 - AB08 reg Elegance diesel with 14k miles - he has done umpty thousand miles with no problems.
