VRS MAF

Featured Replies

Ok,

Had my engine mil light on for a number of months now with me doing nothing about it. (Winter = lazyness)

Long story short a couple of months ago on the engine test reading came up 'Engine running too lean'

Idle revs are up and down, when i swap gear the revs linger horribly, the same if i drop the clutch ( like ridiculous long ), even at low revs like 3-4k.

Sounds like empty revvy and perhaps doesnt pull or is as quick as id expect.

This to me says .. MAF sensor. but when i unplug my MAF senseor (the presumed busted one under the bonnet) i get the ABS/TC light come up on the dashboard above the engine mil light.

Now if it was the MAF sensor that was gone, shouldnt this light be on all the time????

And if it is the MAF and i swap it tommorow morning, will the engine mil light go by itself or will i have to clear the faults.... and if i dont clear the faults will i still see the improvement with the car after fitting regardless of the engine mil light being on?

Any help much appreciated, Thanks

could be a boost leak giving you that code, have you checked all your pipes?

+1 for boost leak. This is what caused mine. check the Y breather pipe and for split pipe near the dipstick holder under the inlet manifold

So were saying the Engine mil light could be boost leak,

but the moving idle revs are still the MAF ?

I'd say make sure you have no boost leak I've had an engine light for a boost leak. Also if you replace the maf make sure it's a genuine one.

I pulled stuff apart this afternoon,

took off the engine cover

and that beautiful little Y piece rubber hose mentioned earlier, WAS BLOWN TO BITS!... haha o dear :( , which explains the 'engine running too lean' mil light message as that breather pipe rejoins the intake AFTEr the MAF sensor so the engine is not compensating for it.

also found that the mug who had this car before me hadnt done one of the plugs up tight enough and so i was loosing some pressure in 1 of the pots... but all is well i changed all the spark plugs today anyway.

Drives sooo much better. Thanks every1 for your input, been a real help.

and now to my next dilema.
