Featured Replies

hi,

new to the site.

Looking to purchase a Skoda Octavia Vrs Diesel 57 plate from my dealer. Just wondered if anyone had any tips, anything to look out for with it?

Has 32k on clock, black.

Nice car and all the reviews online seem good so i am excited about doing the switch.

Any sensinble things i should upgrade myself?

many thanks

57 is around the time certain "options" became standard.

So make sure the vehicle has:

18" Wheels

Jumbobox Storage box in the front

Rear Electric Windows

Climatronic Air Con

All these were an option up until 2007.

So not having these can damage the value of the vehicle (as I've discovered when I've traded-in my January 2007 Octy)

thanks for the reply, yes has all round electric windows and climatronic air con, not sure about the size of wheels and storage box but will check this.

it will come with 1 year warranty, is there anything i should worry about checking mechnaically? it is pearl black, will this be fine to keep clean etc the paintwork good on the skodas?

i have never owned a skoda before but i do like the vrs, diesel so gives good mpg also which is what i need.

any small things i should consider to do to the car to enhance looks inside or out?

also i have yet to test drive, the battery was flat when i went to see it, going back on friday. does the exhaust have a nice purr off it at all? nothing chavish just a nice noise when you get to certain rpm? or is this something you need to look at doing yourself?

thanks again, seems a good strong community which is nice.

Errm, not if it's a diesel no!

yeah did not think so, could and an air filter in i suppose to get something from it?

what about mechanically, any common things to watch out for.

i read the diesels are tricky to drive, this the case?

thanks again

Check the service history and make sure it's had the dpf and surrounding issues sorted out. Also consider if your pattern of driving will suit the diesel, e.g. regular fast A road or motorway driving to clean out the dpf.

In general, filters and exhausts do nothing for diesel engines in either performance or noise terms. Once you get to extreme levels of tuning then an exhaust can make a difference to performance, but to answer your question, there is no point changing the filter or exhaust on an otherwise standard diesel.

And I'm not sure what is meant by diesels being tricky to drive- it's a new one on me.

You have to drive them differently to how you would drive a petrol if you want to extract the best performance but it's not more difficult, it's just what you are used to.

thanks for all your replies,

we tend to do alot of motorway driving at weekends and maybe a few during the week. i tend to walk to work though weather permitting.

jlwah, what was the problems with dpf?

the car has 32k on clock and i read in another post that cambelt should be changed at 40k is this right? 8k to next service, should i ask it to have a full service before taking?

thanks again for all the replies

If you do a search on here for DPF Problems you'll find plenty of information relating to the issues. If memory serves me correctly, it wasn't so much the dpf itself as the various sensors that manage the exhaust and regeneration programmes. My 07 PD vRS went in to the garage on probably 4 or 5 occasions having gone into limp home mode over the first couple of years of ownership. On each occasion it was a sensor or a wire or reprogramme required.

Anyway, it was all covered by the warranty and they eventually got it sorted and it didn't put me off getting another one, allbeit a CR diesel.

As for cambelt change, I think Skoda recommend 60K miles.

It is 40,000 miles.

Again a quick forum search on "cambelt" will reveal plenty of recent discussion on when the belt should be replaced...

I was never expecting to welcome the Christmas poo to a Skoda forum, but I suppose its something I can tell the grand-kids! :giggle:

Sorry, I can't give you much in the way of advice on the diesel engine, however I will say that you have chosen the best colour (and fastest)! As with other VAG motors the paint is very hard so it can be polished up to look fantastic

I'm surprised about the info provided on the cam belt change, 40k seems awfully quick, I have just had mine done on the Tfsi which iirc is recommended at 60k or 4 years, which is sooner. I'm sure I've read somewhere that the diesel is 80,000 miles or 100,000km, but don't quote me on that.

EDIT: Just done a bit of googling and the vast majority state 60k or 4 years the same as petrol, but I have also just spoken to a work colleague who has a VW Golf GT with the 2.0 PD 140 engine and his handbook states 80k?????
