Opinions on new vs second hand ECUs

Featured Replies

Has anyone had any experience, good or bad, with replacing a faulty ECU with either of the above options. After having a long series of problems with our 2002 Octy's throttle pedal (full story in http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/194666-repeated-throttle-pedal-faults-ecu/page__p__2315996__fromsearch__1#entry2315996) the dealership have said that we need to replace the car's ECU – but Skoda don't have a replacement in stock and we'd have to put in a back order. I've seen a number of new (from Czech republic) and second hand ECU's advertised on e-bay and elsewhere but I'm wary, especially as the dealership gave us a long tale of woe about a previous customer who had to send a second hand ECU back four times. All advice very welcome as I've searched for related posts on the forum but not found much. Want to check out all options (including that suggested by pauldazzle) before I go for one.

Cheers

J

If you get a good one, I can't see there being a problem. You will have to get the immobiliser etc recoded to the instrument cluster either way.

Obviously if you have a remap, you will lose it, or you might get lucky and get an ecu with mapped software already on it

cant you get ecu sent away and repaired?

try Ben at shark I'm sure he said he has second hand ecu's and can remove the code on them so they are plug and play lol

I know a fella who does ecu repairs via post.

Thanks to all of you for your advice. Sound like Chris Hughes is the man to know - thanks to pauldazzle for mentioning him to me earlier on and to fatty5000 and billy 2981 for vouching for him. I'll give him a call, and maybe a couple of the other recommendations.

Funny thing is that even before the dealership did anything to the car the problem had disappeared. It's driving like a dream at the moment - all the more because the snow finally seems to be over - then it suddenly loses power again - and always when my girlfriend's driving it and on her way to work in the morning. Someone somewhere is having a laugh.

Been wondering if, if it happens again before I've had a chance to have the ECU looked at, disconnecting the battery might reset the problem temporarily seeing as it seems to vanish after the car's been parked up for a night. Any thoughts?

Thanks to you all again.

Just an update in case it helps anyone who has a similar problem. I called Chris Hughes as suggested. He reckons that all the similar faults he's seen with Skodas have been down to an earth fault rather than the ECU itself. Looks like I'll have to have a look behind the dash.
