Front wheel bearing/ cv boot

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've just got back from Kwik Fit after having my 1.9tdi 03 Superb failed for that old chestnut a split cv boot.

Now I have also noted a rumble from the offending side for quite some time which is geting worse I've changed the cv joint about 18 months ago which cured the usual clickig in tight turns. but the faint rumble is still there.

Kwik fit have quoted £101 to replace the boot and £105 to replace the wheel bearing. Surely if the replace the bearing then they have to remove the boot wouldn't they? and a new boot is about 6 or 7 pounds.

In preparing for the MOT I changed the timing belt, thanks for the help from rotodiesel everything went smoothly. It is very easy as long as you have a good set of the required tools. Don't buy cheap ones like I did.

Glad you managed to change the cambelt without problems.

Changing a wheel bearing is straightforward enough, but you must use a press and have suitable mandrels (or large sockets, some 3/4" drive) to press in the new bearing. You will also probably need a big Sykes puller to get half of the old inner race off the hub. Hitting things will cause misery and damage.

As with the cambelt, it's all easy enough but you need the tools - including a hydraulic press. One compromise is to take the knuckle/hub assembly to an engineering shop (with 2 new bearing circlips which are in the bearing kit) and get them to push out and press in the new bearing. Make sure they're not monkeys and know which parts of the bearing to press on.

rotodiesel.

You don't disturb the CV joint boot when changing a hub bearing - the driveshaft pushes out of the hub on its splines as an assembly.

Thanks Rotodiesel, good idea!!

I have a local garage that may be able to help me out with pressing the bearings out and in.

Cheers

And to add my input, I remember my dad telling me a long time ago how he used the weight of the car to press the wheel bearing in in-lieu of a hydraulic press. Just remove the hub and place on the ground onto a block of wood or something and improvise by placing a large socket or something onto the bearing to press out and similarly to push in by turning the hub the other way around and again use the weight of the car via a suitable jack etc. May seem crude but it works.
